On the speedo cable...Do you have a service manual? If not it's a good thing to have.
On the axles, unless you unbolt the entire suspension you wil be hard pressed to get the axles out without damging something.

u def. have to take the front sus apart t get the axles out.
disconnect the lower control arms from either the knuckle via the balljoint or from the car. also, disconnect the lca from the shock. its real easy. to get the axle nuts loose, ur gonna need a breaker bar and a torque multiplier (long pipe) if they havent been off recently. and be sure to bend up the tabs on teh nuts that keep them from backing off the axle. once there only in teh trans, pry them out of the trans with a long screw driver.
as for the spedo cable, theres a metal clip that goes around it. pull that off, then u should be able to pull the cable straight out. u may pull the vss (veichle speed sensor) out of the trans too, but thats not a big deal. just make sure u dont pull the cable out of the cluster too. i did that. pain in the azz.

oh well, i'll try to get it out tommarow in sunlight and not 5000 candle power floodlamp, i'll try to post up some pic if someone wanted to see how the swap goes
edit: wait unclip it from teh cluster and run it out of the firewall? would that work?

i suppose u could pull t through. i think if u pull the cable out of the trans, it'll come out one way or the other. pullin it via the cluster is a pain. but it is an option. look around the cable to vss and see if there is a little metal clip (not tab.) if the clip is still there, pull it off. if u did that already, spray some wd-40 or pb blaster in there and try again. also, there is (i think) a metal sleve that goes over the cable to hold it in with a bolt that threads into the case. im sure u got that off, but just incase u didnt.......
