Its all about how fast do you want to go? Just start reading on here. Learn what you can. Most are going to tell you either go turbo, get a swap, or both. You have a long but fun road ahead of you. Educate yourself as much as you can.

your car aint gonna do **** with just intake and muffler. It will just sound loud. I would just get a nice suspension right away and then work on your motor. Suspension is so much fun. Your best bet with that motor is to get an ex civic transmission which will take like a half a second off your 1/4 time. Then maybe throw on an ex vtec head. Or you could always swap in a b series motor or turbo your d series.

How fast do you want to go?? deep pocket make car go fast, not intake or exhaust!!
But with intake and cat-back exhaust you should noticed a little gain in performance and will deffinately be more fun to drive

Drop it, Swap it, and good brakes to stop it!

My brother makes the same amount you do. He's full-time though. Sitting money aside for an H22 to go in his 95 Accord one day in the future

B-series swap and a turbo kit. Save about $5000 and then go to work on it.....

B18b swap with a JDM ITR tranny. makes a pretty quick car for cheap.

you need to go slow to go fast... get it?

don't buy an intake and muffler yet. do a bunch of reading first, then some proper suspension mods, brakes, traction, then you can go fast: either motor swap, or build on what you've got. save your $$ until you're sure you know where it's going.

youve come to a good place to learn things. your first impulse will be to do stuff to your car to "get attention" or "turn heads" but just slow down and learn a bunch before you rice your car out. hanging around this place will ensure your car stays pretty clean looking. here are some pointers for going fast with your exsisting sohc motor on a budget.

nothing will get more attention than your 96 hatch rolling around town spankin everyone. all least the attention you want. if you want the cops attention get a big wing, loud muffler, some flashy grafix, and some blingin
wheels
good luck with it, just save and do it right the first time

lower it first, put some rims on, get a lip. extent of mods to the SOHC should be limited to a intake, or a turbo.

if you want to go somewhere you need to either have 1. a lot of $$ or 2. a lot of dedication

i have a 96 hatch, first if its an auto, swap in a manual, try a mini me swap, which is a head out of a ex of the same body style. when all is said and done, youll have decent power, youll good with the muffler and intake. lowering it with new wheels and tires was one of the best things i did. i dont brake, i just turn. good luck you got a great car!

thanks guy,

you have all been very helpful! to be honest, the reason why im interested in I&E is because I want to be able to do it myself. A new motor would be sweet but I dont have the time, knowledge or a spare car to drive around in while the hatch is being worked on. Anyhow, the suggestions were great, its just out of my reach for now! But they were very very helpful. THanks a bunch

well your not going to be able to go very fast then. unless you would want to go turbo or something. and with the motor deal it doesn't take that long it can be done in 8 hours if all the parts are there

like was mentioned earlier just do a tranny swap, u can find a used ex tranny for about the same cost as an intake and exhaust. the tranny swap will give u a noticeable increase in performance. i'm running an si tranny from a 92-95 hatch in my 99 hatch big difference with the tranny swap.
