does anyone know if the "negative" and "positive" speaker wires make a difference? for example, i put the "positive" wire into the "negative" spot on a speaker, will it affect the sound of it or anything?
yeah i need more info on that too, from wat i heard, low watts speaker you can mix them neg. and pos. up ;; although high watts running power, is not recommend? is dat rite or no...
idealy you want all of your speaker wires to be hooked up correctly. pos to pos neg to neg. this is called in phase...or in polarity. if you don't have them hooked up correctly then you have what's called out of phase or out of polarity. If you have 2 speakers and one is hooked up correctly and the other opposite they will move opposite directions. this creates cancellation. you'll notice a loss of bass as well as depth and quality. If you are dealing with subs it is more noticable than with mids n highs. if 2 subs are out of phase or out of polarity you'll notice a really poor sound with almost no bass whatsoever. you'll know you're out of polarity by unhooking one and noticing an increase in volume and sound. so yes it does matter.
The above is true in theory, but b/c of the challenges of the auto environment, you don't always want everything installed "by the book"
Rarely, if ever are SQ cars hooked up with all cars "in phase" Generally, to get all drivers to work together properly, it takes some experimentation. For example, because many components are setup with a mid near the bottom of the door, and the tweeters up near the dash, it can be helpful to flip the tweeters out of phase. The same can be true for subwoofers, putting them out of phase with the rest of the system can make them blend in better.
So, experiment...it won't hurt your speakers, but it may affect your sound.

People who know what they are doing will set things out of phase.
I swap polarity on **** all the time.
Helps sometimes and other times it sounds like ****.
all depends.

yea, but I think rcurley's point is that you have to have the time to test the setup and be able to verify that the "blend" is actually better rather than obtrusive..
Cool post rcurley :D havn't been around in a while (damn school) can't belive your still around!

Thanks...I'm still around, but my system has changed a lot lately. Let's just say some old school gear and some new stuff, a little optical, and custom door panels....I'll leave the rest to the imagination, and photos will be forthcoming
I'm actually getting paid holiday this winter break from work, and school off, so I'm locking myself in my garage and building this system if it takes 16hour days....it will go in this winter!

As mentioned, playing with polarity of a tweeter can improve SQ, mostly with imaging, again the left and right must be the same.
Also as mentioned switching polarity on the sub can have a huge effect on SQ, more and more HUs with sub control will have a sub phase "switch".
Rear speakers, when used and wired in series for mono rear fill can have a positive effect on your sound stage by bringing it "up" when they are wired out of phase with the front speakers it will also sometimes help eliminate "left/right bias", [part of imaging].
I have to agree with "playing with polarity" no two cars are alike with exactly the same system and component placement, so what may work for one system will not necessarily work for another.
Then there is you, the music you listen to and how you want it to sound, when it sounds good to you, however it is done, it is the right way. 94
dang yall always beat me to the good ones!!! i know some sq guys that if a speakers is alot farther away they will reverse polarity plus use some time correction techniques to help there quality out alot.
