Need a little 3G GS-R info
I found a nice '99 GS-R at a Saturn dealership right next to my job, i wasn't looking for one actually, i just happend to drive by and there it was. I scoped out the car and the guy at the dealership let me drive it and I've got a few things I wanted to ask about the newer 3G GS-R's. For one, I know the IAB's come online at about 5600rpms and VTEC at 4400, but while driving it, one of the few times I got on it, I could hardly hear any kind of crossover at all. I listed carefully and I heard only a slight change of tone somewher around 5k. Now keep in mind the car is 100% stock except for a short shifter and a supposed Centerforce clutch, so I was expecting a bit louder transition into VTEC but then I remember driving my friend's then new '00 GS-R sedan and it was the same way, very quiet through the rev's, couldn't pick up VTEC. Is this normal or does it sound like an abnormality. Pretty much all of the GS-R's i've "noticed" have had aftermarket intakes so they really can't count because we all know an aftermarket intake magifies the intake sound a good 10 fold. Overall the car is very clean and in pretty good shape. 19k miles, intertior is great, exterior is great, motor is clean (there is a fuel pressure gauge on the filter housing indicating some kind of fuel control device was used at one point) and it is rattle and shake free. Really aside from the jumpy clutch and the rather oddly quiet engine, the car by my eyes checks out. So what do you guys think? Am I right about being suspiciious about the sound of the engine or what? My GS-R even through the stock intake is alot louder than this one is, but then the B16's have always been pretty damn loud even stock. Any input would be apprieciated.

well i have always noticed that stock gsrs are very quiet its perfectly normal after you put the basic micheal BOLT ONs on the car it will be muuuch louder
You won't hear the cams switch at 4400. You should be able to hear the second intake runners open at 5700 though. But it won't be super loud or anything like that. You won't feel it kick or anything like that either. The GSR cam switchover was made to be very smooth with the use of the second intake runners.
Well I've never "felt" VTEC in any car, and quite frankly the only VTEC I can see giving you a feeling of the crossover would be the NSX which as over 3-liters of engine to deliver the torque necessary. So I take it that it's normal to be as quiet as it is, well that's a relife
Thanks guys for the input!

You shouldn't really be able to hear it in a stock GSR except maybe in third or forth gear when the engine is reving slower. I know that's how it was in my 96 GSR. I couldn't hear the secondaries open up unless I was on the highway going(usually going into the mountains) through thrid and forth gear. Even then you have to listen close.

GSR VTEC xover is never as loud as Civic Si, Type-R or even Preludes.
Hmmmm...Short Shifter, fuel guage and a centerforce clutch on an '99 GSR? Sounds like the previous owner may have had Boost. Check to see if the exhaust header looks like it has been removed (newer looking gasket). It's just a guess, but I would at least look a little closer to make sure. Can you contact the previous owner? Here in KY, it's law that all used car dealers have the name & phone# of previous owners. If it was boosted, it could have internal damage. Have an independent mechanic look it over before you buy it....just to make sure!

GSR-REX, thanks for advice, I'm having my friend who was a Honda technician look it over with me
01GSR, I'm picking it up for $15,800.00 with a factory shifter installed, adjusted/relplaced if need be clutch and their repainting the rear bumper for me (looked like somebody took a corner too sharp and scraped a chunk of paint off the corner).

I couldn't hear the intake until I removed the silencer and couldn't hear the VTEC switchover until I installed an exhaust. Now the VTEC switchover is very noticeable. 2000 GSR
