how to verify if type r?

just curious how to verify an engine is a JDM type r by looking at it; and
not opening anything up?

Look for the stamp which will be right on the block. If its JDM it will say B18C right on it.

And make sure there isn't a wad of body filler beside the C...

If it's got the headers, the piping is 2.5" instead of 2.25"....
