Junkyard turbo selection, input needed
hey guys im building my 2,4L s13 and am faced with the choice of what turbo to choose, basically i have a few hook ups at the wreckers so this rules out a nice t4/t3 hybrid. Id like to boost about 8-9 psi and net about 220whp. what are some choices with turbos i dont want it to spool forever as my stock redline is a mere 6500-7000 rpm, Id like to spool at about 2900-3500 rpm, id also like to keep it internally gated
some choices avail at a junkyard:
Volvo T3
Thunderbird T3
DSM 14b
DSM T25
Saab t3
Audi KKK K26
MAzda IHI RHB5
Holset cummins turbos
Toyota ct26
T4
85 300zx t3 AR.63 and exhaust .60 im kinda leaning towards this one it came from a 3 litre

LOL
I would say the T3 off of the 300zx
Its a damn good turbo and it won't spool out they work very very well on a 3.0 i would suspect that it would work well with a 2.4. Early spool time

ya the tbird super coupe T3 is pretty big if it's from a 5speed. .63 turbine and .60 comp I think. Should flow more than the saab/volvo t3s and the t25- 14b mitsu. I don't have any experiance with the 300z t3 but it sounds kinda like the thunderbird one.
I think it would be pretty easy to make 220 with either one but you might need a little more boost, altough I have seen some dynos of KA motors at very low boost (5-6) and making pretty big power and LOTS of torque.

the main turbos ive seen used out of the junkyard are the following
.42/.48 T3--Saab 900 before 93, volvo, and a bunch of other cars
.48/.60 T3--Auto SVO...great turbo for any daily driver
.60/.63 T3---Manual SVO---good turbo for b16(laggy), b18b1...im not sure about the c series...
14b's are used often, personally i find them difficult to use b/c most manifolds for hondas use T3 flanges
T25 is generally even small on a D series engine and someone posted recently they were almost in boost driving around in Mcdonalds...
Personally, i like the .48/.60 and the .60/.63

um that turbo won't be laggy on a b-series, ive been in friends cars with that turbo on a d-series and it hardly had lag... IMO its alittle small for a bseries

I have the SAAb 9000S turbo on my CRX D series. It was good while my engine lasted.... At around 6 psi I was making close to 170-180 hp. It pulled hard, but becuase of the way I had my intercooler piping set up, it didn't hit full boost until about 4,500. It started pulling around 3800.
