Rust
what is the deal with honda's and rust.. The honda dealer states that they do not have a rust problem with it- but my friend is a honda tech and he said that it is a very big problem... They call it honda rot and it infects 3 out of 4 hondas... I have had both rear quarter panels fixed, and it is coming back on one side in less than 6 months and I just found some in my rear drivers side door jam. I hate it. My car is a 94 and has over 200K on it but it still runs really well.... Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can stop the rust? At this time I am not too worried about the looks of the door jam but i want to stop it before it gets any worse.. And suggestions would be helpful... Thanks all..
I have a 90, and there isn't one place my car is rusted, I wash it at least 1-2 times a week, also those good for nothing gas station car washes are good for the undercarriage wash (rinses build up of salt sand and grime from under the car and wheel wells). The amount of washing could be a factor. Not enough and bam rust, also if you live my salt water, I heard that can eat away paint faster. Also when you wash your car make sure and spray in the wheel well and on that lip, its a storage place for sand and dirt (where it connects to the side skirts/oem molding). Hope this helps.

yes waxing and keeping the car clean especially when it's covered in salt will certainly help. in the winter i go to the manual car washes and use the pressure washer to get all the salt out from wheel wells and undercarriage.
once it starts rusting your screwed though. the only way to fix it without it reaccuring would be to cut out the rusted metal and put in new stuff which is $$$. or if you catch it when it's small you can sand the rust down and use touch paint. it will comeback, but you can keep redoing this process.

there first problem is the stupid rubber trim on the back wheel wells...i have a rotted 5th gen and its getting bad ....the best way to fix it is to cut all the rust out and replace with good metal prime and paint...theres allways a chance it will come back

they did..look at the 98+ accords
also on my 95 the trim is somewhat peeled back and mine did not rust yet. but it did start to rust on the lower wheel well down by the base of the rear door.

They did? My mom has a 2001 and it looked the same to me. I guess when I get home this weekend I'll take another look at it.

I agree that is where mine is rusting again.. The rear door.. It really sucks... I am going to try to fix it to stop the rust but it won't be pretty.. I have 200K and am just trying to stay away from car payments for about one more year..
Well if anyone has used that rust to metal black paint let me know. i saw it at the auto store and I want to know it it helps retard the rust.

If you live in an area where the city salts the roads, you're screwed. It doesn't matter what you drive. Take a good look at a the trucks with snow plows and salt tanks. They are destroyed within 4-5 years. Compare the same year and make of used car from Ohio to a used car from Arizona. It's sick.
If you own a vehicle that don't want it to rust, park it in the winter. A climate controlled garage works wonders, too,

The best thing I know of is to get one of those oil coating treatments, like RustProof or whatever. It coats the bottom of the car with black goo to protect the body. It can stop the salt from destroying your car for a while.
If it's already rusting, you're screwed though. My 92 has it really bad in the driver's rear quarter panel. I'm just going to wait until summer, then cut out that entire section and replace it with some sort of sheet metal or something.
It really sucks finding a paint match as well. It's just not possible for my colour of red

Take it to a shop. Have them grind the paint off down to the metal, smooth it out with a little bit of body plastic, prime, paint, and clearcoat. That should keep it from re-surfacing.

nope that doesn't work cause it's not surface rust. it's rotting from the backside so you have to cut out the rusted metal.

have u guys heard of the Anti-rust mechanism...its like a module that sends a electirc charge through out the body that prevents rusting from any caar.....i dont have one but my boss has one on her focus and it has not one spot of rust on her body...she has a scratch on her car and its been exposed for a year now and still no rust on it...i live in ohio where is snows and her car seems to be fine...her dad has a crown vic with the module to and his doesnt have a spot of rust...i dunno about the rest of the car but the outter body has no rust what so ever...i dunno where they got the module from but i guess it works for them
I had rust in the 1/4 panels of my eg hatch.
Took it to the best bodyshop in knoxville
they cut it all the way out in like a 15 inch diameter back there and rust primered it welded new panels and gurantted me it wouldnt come back or the paint wouldnt chip for $1300.00 they specialize in re storing cars...first thing i would do is take the little rubber piece out of the 1/4 panel that holds water..GOODLUCK

Does the city salt the roads? Or do they use ash? I have a friend from St. Louis who claims the rust problem isn't as bad there because they do not use road salt.

6 years I have owned my car, its a 90, so for being 13 years old....there is no rust at all, guess I just pamper my car. They use gravel and salt and magnesium chloride. After a snow storm my car looks grey and brown, I then have to wash it at least 2 times after the snow "storm" its a total pain in the ****. Not to mention I should get stock in washer fluid, that mag chloride cakes on your windshield and doesn't make for a friendly driving experience.
I have a 94 so obviously I had this problem too, I wanted to fix it myself, and I did a really good job for under $200 plus a lot of time.... but then again, it only lasted about a year.... I had no prior experience in painting, bondo, sanding, or anything and I figured it all out with advice from people at home and on this board. I cut out a decent chunk with a dremel around the whole spot of rust so that no rush was left at all theni put some hardware mesh in there with tight squares in it so it was something to bond to and it was easy to cut to the whole size... so then ibondo'd it and sanding and paint with mixed up spray cans, lol, 3 coats of spray paint and 4 coats of clear coat spray, it came out really good but to make it look good i had to paint the whole back quarter panel, only where there were edges, like the pinstripe down to all the rest of the cracks. soooooo it looked really good and i did this is in the summer of '02 and this picture is from teh summer of 03'
Its already back after a year, and im sure it will get a hell of a lot worse this winter in Syracuse.... but it was fun to do and it makes it look a whole lot better than a huge rusty whole.....

Rust sucks... I had a guy i know do the work on both sides and the one side looks great but the other side has rust coming back. I showed it to him and he is all about fixing the problem but he stated that with out repacing a much bigger part of the quarter panel I will see the same result. He stated that the big problem is that it will hide in the wheel well and is very hard to stop,, It sucks and i only wish that Honda could build a car like they build and engine.. 200+K and still able hold it's own at red light derby..
