Which ECU?
Which ECU would be the best to run a ITR engine on OBD1 setup?
It is important it dosent run too rich because i live in Canada and i need it good for winter starting.
Its a 98 GSR engine with a 98 ITR head in a 88 CRX si.

Its currently running a PR3 with a mugen chip. When i upgrade to OBD1 i want to know what would be the best ECU to run. I didnt do the wiring, it was done when i bought the car. I know mugen chips are known to disable some codes. I hope i dont get any suprises.

Thanks In Advance Everyone!

With the P28 being the cheapest of the two, however it disables the stock knock sensor...I'm running it, but then again I also have a J&S Safeguard.

how does a Jdm P73 sound?
Since the JDM P73 is really obd1 ecu with obd2 plugs. I would just have to find somwhere to get some obd2 plugs. Hmmm...
Dosent the P72 look for butterflies in the intake manifold?
How would that work. Or are we talking a chipped P72 here... I dont really want to go chipped ECU. The P28 must be chipped, and has no knock which i kinda woudl like to have.
So would a bone stock P72 work fine on a almost ITR engine?
Or would it throw a code since its a differnet intake style.

FYI -- Mugen does not produce "chips" for ECUs.
From the King Motorsports website
"Note: .......Mugen does not produce or sell ECU chips, stock ECUs with replacement chips, or programmable ECUs."

Anyone have any other help about the P72 Ecu and the butterflies in the intake mani.
Anyoen running a P72 on a ITR engine?

stock knock sensor only works under 5000rpm.. - so if its its not much more money.. then get it.. if you're paying too much, then its not that important imo. and i don[t think itr IM has butterflies to begin with. - anyone knows that for sure?

P72 stock, will not have good fuel and ignition maps for you, the IABs are a non-diagnostic part, and will not CEL. but the P72 will be optimized for them.
A chipped P28 or P72, whichever is cheaper, with a good all-motor program, is your best bet.
Mugen chips honda ECUs the same way that everyone else chips honda ECUs. Their Stand-alone Race ECU.... It's just a facotry purchased OEM ecu, dont' get it twisted.

I beg to differ!
Having owned and used a Mugen ECU in my 97 ITR, and researching it's merit ahead of time ... it was clear that the processor/speed was different, as well as the actual "Program", and not just the fuel and timing maps as in "chipped" ECUs.

Guess again ...
I'm just talking about the construction of a Mugen ECU, and that it's not simply a "chipped" oem unit like you appear to believe.
BTW -- The Mugen ECU doesn't make use of a secondary O2 sensor, or probably even give error codes! Ed

You are the one who has no idea. Have you ever even seen a real Mugen ECU? Do some research before posting false information. Mugen does not produce or sell chips for ECU's -- PERIOD.
Mugen N1 ECU's are OBD1, BTW.

I talked to some of my contacts, and they told me that the "mugen" chips available in the aftermarket, where read out of Mugen ECUs. This tells me, that they are electronically the same, seeing as the mugen program runs in all the honda ECUs.
It doesn't make any sense for them to completely re-engineer a computer, when one already exists, and they probably got the source code to it via their honda contacts.
I asked RPT, so we'll see what richard gets back to me with.

I'll find the pics of the two ECU boards that were once posted here.
Maybe that will shut you up, and by now you should realize that we're talking about more than just a "program", and a chip or two.
Back soon, going out to get a couple of bottles of Merlot before the snow starts back up again for the weekend.
There have been many times lately when I wished I'd stayed with my Mugen ECU and N/A ITR instead of this turbo setup and Hondata crap!!!
