Default Overheating problem in my beater :(

I know its not really ITR related, other than the fact I now have to drive my R daily which I hate doing, especially since it was SNOWING today Anyway I figure it could be good problem determination for everyone in general so Im posting it here.

Basically what it comes down to is my EG hatch is overheating, in a very serious way. It recently got a new radiator and thermostat, and it ran like a champ. Now suddenly this problem. Heres the symptoms:

- Temp gauge way past "H" lol
- Coolant spilling/spewing/exiting/spitting/squirting out of overflow can
- Upper radiator hose WAS "bulging" somewhat, then went back to normal
- while engine running, upper radiator hose kinda soft, almost like no pressure inside.
- the car does burn up coolant (I think the head gasket is going), and I recently added some and drove fine afterwards.

Im guessing the first things to check would be pressure in the system. But I dont have a tester. Since I know the radiator and thermo are new, Im thinking water pump which has probably never been replaced (130K). Probably a good time to change the timing belt as well.

What do you guys think?

How recently? Possibly an air pocket in the system?

I dont recall if the fan was coming on or not. Is there a way to force it to turn on? Or do I just have to leave the car running and wait to see if it comes on. If it doesnt come on, what does that indicate?

Recent as in the past couple months so I dont think it was that, unless a pocket was in there after I added some coolant. But it was running fine after that as well.

if it does not come on you can over heat. yes you can have the fan on 24 7 if you pull the fuse and jump a wire. if the fan does not come on then your switch is bad
