Default LS cam gears...

Getting some work done (maintenance) and I am thinking about putting a set of cam gears on an internally stock LS (cutting valve cover too)

With stock cams, would this be worth the fundage ? $180-$200 for Skunk2, or even Hayame (good deal down here) parts...

Would they be good for any Hp if tuned right ? Or should I put my $$ elsewhere ? Headers maybe....?

ligthten your stock flywheel to about 12lbs (about $120-150 for balancing, shaving, and resurfacing) or get a 7.5lbs Fidanza or CM or Mueller ($300), and you be happy,,,,get a K&N drop in filter unless you go with AEM cold air intake, next would be a less back prssure good free flowing muffler or header as in JDM ITR 4-2-1 ITR or JDM 4-1 ITR....

join the club, i have been trying to do some research on the benifits of a mild cam in the LS, such as a crower 402. However i am unsure of the benifits of tuning the stock cams, as far as i know the LS is pretty well optiamized. Remeber that in our LS engines to build power at Higher RPM levels is somewhat difficutl simply because of the nature of the engine itself. It has a stronger mid range as opposed to a stronger high end.

if you are curious about the cam possibilities though check out :

might be of some help

What you said is very true about the power in the LS. However, I have the Crower 402's in my 97 LS and there is quite a difference. I can pull on GSR's with mediocre drivers.

I believe with cams, it's wise to get an FPR and cam gears to balance everything out and tune out the most power. Gears on a stock cam won't yield much power, if any. Keep in mind that cam gears really don't give power, they move the powerband around giving you more power in certain rpm ranges as opposed to others. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that's correct.

Crower 402 cams for the LS is weaksauce.
i have the 403s and i wish i have gotten at least the 404's. my 403s idle exactly like stock, pulls hard from about 5k to redline but not hard enough. for mild cams, the 403s are definitely MILD to the most literal sense.

and cam gears definitely help on cams and other mods. just by adjusting the settings on my gears after getting it dynoed for "peak performance" as they claimed, i shaved off a full 1.0 sec off my 1/4mile e.t.
