Default Black Goo

hey everyone. When I changed my auto tranny fluid, the bolt acts as a magnet in a sense. When I changed my fluid, what is the black goo around the magnet? I dont think they are metal shavings but rather gunk. Can someone tell me what this is?

probably gunk with fine metal in it that causes it to gather together.. just a guess

how long has it been since you changed the tranny fluid?

exactly what he said. rear differentials have them to (except dodges they have a rubber cap). its normal wear and tear but if you start to see big chunks of metal you might want to start saving your pennies for another tranny.

but where does that black gunk come from? is it crap from the moving parts? would you guys say its a sign that more frequent changes are needed? because i change it pretty often, around 20k. im just worried that it might be a sign that im not changing it frequent enough

Normal wear from the tranny internals. This black stuff is a combination of fine metal shavings (normal wear) with sludge. The moving components in a tranny get dirty. And when you trun you car off you form condensation (water) which mixes with the tranny fluid, this combined with the dirt from the moving components produces sludge. This is nothing to be concerned with.
