non-vtec d16y8?
well my friend is picking up a d16y8 from a 94 civic hb for me while hes in delaware. hes getting it for free from some friends and is selling the whole thing to me (intake mani, tb, ecu, dizzy..everything.) for 50 bucks.
but his friend said its not vtec. ive never heard of a nonvtec y8. and i wanted it for a mini-me swap. even if its not vtec would there be any gains from the head. and im not going obd1 now, so besides that.

Negative... There is a Sohc ZC similar to the D16a6 as stated above and there is also a sohc VTEC ZC similar to our d16z6. I know cuz I sell/install them... Y7 came from 96+ DX/CX/LX and the DX coupes have the best gearing.

Look for this solenoid directly behind the distributor. That way you can feel assured when that Nova/Mustang/School Bus passes you that you do have VTEC...

i know where the solenoid is and all that. the thing is i cant see it. its in delaware, im in nc, my friend is picking it up for me while hes in delaware. ive been wanting to do a mini-me swap and thats why i hope its vtec because. i can do almost the whole swap for free if it is.
Oh my God, this thread is so full of misinformation.
The D16Y8 came from a '96-00 Civic EX. D16Y8 = OBD-2 SOHC VTEC 127hp
All D16Y8 engines have VTEC. The '96-00 non-VTEC engine was the D16Y7.
A '95 Civic EX has a D16Z6 engine. D16Z6 = OBD-1 SOHC VTEC 125hp
There is no such thing as a Civic EX hatchback. The Civic EX is coupe and sedan model only. '92-95 Civic hatchbacks are CX, VX, DX, or Si, while '96-00 Civic hatchbacks are CX or DX.
Now, tell us exactly what car this engine came from. Obviously your buddy knows nothing about what he has. If it is a non-VTEC engine from a '95 hatchback, it is either a D15B8 (70hp) or a D15B7 (102hp).
And yes, there are SOHC ZC engines. There is a SOHC non-VTEC ZC, and a SOHC VTEC ZC in addition to the DOHC ZC.

becuase the y8 block is **** compared to the a6 block...right?
besides the one im gettin threw a rod o some **** so its all messed up down there.
and targa. the engine code is most def d16y8. my friend actually has nothing to do w/ this, its his cousin, or his cousins friend or something that hes getting the engine from. hes going to see it and pick it up tomorrow so ill know for sure.
his cousin said its a y8 but not vtec. i told him that there was never a non vtec y8 that i know of.

maybe he thinks its not vtec because it doesn't say it on the motor.. but the only way that motor could be in that car is if someone swapped it in there.. no 95 civic came with a y8. and all that for 50 bucks?.. sounds fishy, i picked up a blown y8 block and head only for 250.. all i can say is thats one hell of a deal

False: DX coupes do not have the best gearing. It's such a piece of ****, many people swap out their DX/CX/LX in favor of one from an EX.

Out of the DX/CX/LX Coupes/Sedans/Hatches, THE DX COUPE HAS THE BEST GEARING. Nowhere in my post was EX mentioned so I assume one would know what I was talking about. Please read closer next time...
Thank you

No such thing exists. If it is a Y8, then it has VTEC - unless someone swapped a non-VTEC head onto the Y8 block.
D16Y8 engines do not say "VTEC" on them anywhere, but they are indeed all VTEC engines.

I told myself... go grab a factory Honda Manual and look it up yourself. On top of that, I have a 2000 Civic DX Coupe which I orginally had a d16y7 in, swapped to a b20, than swapped back to a 98 DX Hatch D16y7 motor/tranny, and it has much longer gearing. My butt dyno and my odometer tell me soooo. If you don't feel like getting a manual, contact Mista Bone, he'll let you know

Never heard of that. Learn something new every day. What ratios are different?
