Does it cough & sputter & almost start, or does it show any signs of life when it's cranking? Does it backfire throught the throttle body? Does the starter sound normal or does it spin like there's no compression? Give us some more clues...

Got your firing order wrong when you installed plug wires? Double check - that can make it backfire through the TB.

Do you know if your timing belt & valves are OK? How about bad camshaft timing? Or even bent valves (ouch)? Measure your compression & tell us what you get.

PS... 'turning over' is when the starter motor cranks your engine. It sounds like yours is turning over, but firing INcorrectly. Turning over & NOT firing would mean it spins just like if you had disconnected your distributor completely.

GSRontheBottle: Do YOU get code 21? or is yours just similar otherwise??
You got a B20 with VTEC??? If not, then your code 21 is bogus because it is for VTEC. Better yet, if you've got a VTEC ECM with a non-VTEC engine, are you SURE you have all your harnesses wired up to the right places??? You might want to check on the hybrid forum because I don't know what combinations are plug-n-play...

cr8zygsr:
What about yours? Does it cough & sputter when it cranks? Does it spin free as if your valves are bent?

I checked the firing order and i think its right. 3,4 (top left to right) 1,2 (bottom left to right) it has spark fuel and injector pulse. the timing belt is good as well as compression. om leaning towards an ecu problem, i went from obd2b from obd1 with harness. my ecu was stolen and im trying to avoid the whole immobilizer thing. the ecu came from ebay. the seller said it has a skunk2 chip in it. i was able to flash a code out of (21 vtec problem that should have nothing to do with my prob) so im assuming that it works wo knows i might have got screwed. do you need a chip to run a obd1? has anybody had any problems running this ecu in a obd2b car. any help appreciated

That's the right firing order, unless your distributor is 180 out. Your VTEC code 21 shouldn't prevent it from starting at all.

If your ECU wasn't getting a tach signal it wouldn't fire the injectors. So that much looks OK. Are you sure your plugs aren't fouled? Did you check compression just now? (Do the plugs look OK?)

Seems like if you have fuel, spark, and injector pulse, it should at least sputter & cough. So this is kinda strange - I wish I could figure it out.

i know the compression is good. somebody tried steeling my car and it ran before that. i should check the plugs though. my car has a hidden fuel cut off switch so maby they tried cranking it so long that the plugs are fouled out. i hope thats it but i dough it. they stole my msd wires and box but i replaced it as well as everything else they took. how easily can then plugs foul out that they don't fire right?

I had a similar problem with my civic. I had done some work, nearly what you did and tried to start it. I got nothing, I looked it over for a long time and called a few friends. Finally I saw that the battery was gone. **last time I do my mechanic work while i'm wasted**It was in the garage on the charger. Fixed my problem.

I had some plugs that I fouled by flooding. I dried the gas out, the plugs looked really clean, they were fairly new. Still wouldn't start. I was too stubborn to put new plugs in, so I tried everything else. Besides the plugs looked really good. When I finally put brand new plugs in it started right up. YMMV, but for the price of a set of plugs...

now if i get a good ecu that would be an obd1 ( i have the conversion harness)
would it have to be chiped in any way to work. I also reinstalled a new apexi vafc. is there a differnet install for that on a obd1 ecu. remember its a obd2b car with a obd1 ecu and conversion harness.
