Default Power Steering Noises (Minor) & where to buy a new steering rack...

Hey guys,

I recently have had issues with my steering rack making a small moaning noise...
The noise is made w/ the car on or off (pump on or off) also its made with the car on jackstands or on the floor. So this rules out my p/s pump.
I can't pinpoint where its comming from, but I know it has to do w/ the steering system.

The noise is primarely when turning the steering wheel right at a stand still.
When I am driving even 5 mph I do not notice the noise etc...

Anyhow, what should I do ?
The manual doesnt really help.

I tried replacing my power steering fluid & I even added an additive to it that a part guy gave me for older power steering systems moning etc..

Worst case is replacing my rack & pinion :-/
Where can I purchase prefferably a new rack & pinion for a 95 integra rs ?

I know discount/napa can get them...
Anyone else make an aftermarket performance one ?

Thanks for you're help,
John

I purchased a used rack from import auto salvage.
I have been lazy & not replaced the rack yet...

I also purchased a tilton resevor & some hydro fittings to make a resevor/breather kit and pull the p/s to gain 5 whp... but it kinda feels like *** when i pull the belt so I am kinda hesistating to try the breather kit w/ the new rack.

You're not gonna gain 5whp by taking out the p/s. Sorry.

I've NEVER heard of someone replacing a steering rack in a DA or DB, and i'm sure that not much changed with the DC's...

What does it sound like?

I have seen several dyno charts w/ gains of 4.5 whp - 6 whp go do some searches...

The noise is mild & it only exists when at a stand still also when cold out (60 deg)

Do some reasearch on this site and you will find numerous Dyno Plots of the results and yes it is about 5hp.

Regarding the steering rack try

Sohfast.com

Its not that hard of a job, done it 3x now.

Regarding the steering rack... what are you talking about ?

There is to my knowledge no manual rack that I can install into my 95 dc2.

Yes there is , a 92 95 Manual Steering rack from a Civic CX. I have one in my DC2 right now. The steering ratio isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It is a lot easier than the power>manual coversion, and it is a lot lighter. It all blots up, just make sure you get the knuckle joint to join to the steering column.

so you have to use a civic cx steering knuckle...
but you retain the civic steering collum ?

if this is true, why dont guys just do this instead of a breather kit etc...
there must be a reason...

I did some searching:

Things needed...
*CX rack
*CX rack to column joint
*CX rack bushing
*Integra rack bushing

All bolts up no problem. Yank yours out, and throw the new one in.
You need the CX joint because the spline is different on the Integra, and it won't fit.
Also, the threaded holes meant for the P/S rack bushing is way bigger than the CX one.
So all I did was take the CX bushing, and put the Integra bushing around it and use the
Integra bracket to tighten it down.

Thats all correct, except I didn't have to use the Integra bushing?

Remeber to lower the subframe when taking your old rack out. It also helps to take off the gear set as well as all the lines.
