Default what good is a lighter flywheel?

i've been hearing about people getting lighter flywheels or shaving their flywheels.
what performance increases would one expect from doing this?
any downsides?

This is usually only implemented with a serious horsepower adder such as a turbo or supercharger. Reducing the weight of a flywheel will help you accelerate faster, but with a slight decrease in torque usually.

Lighter flywheel will increase top end and rev faster but you do lose a little bottom end. It's great for N/A or F/ I.

Agreed, lightened flys are wonderful.

ah..the beauty of a comptech 6pd flywheel...nothing like making your car rev out faster and haul *** on the highway....it's like night and day...wouldnt go lightening my stock flywheel though...not hearing good things about that...

I've heard taking the stock down to the 12 lbs isn't bad, and it's safe. Anything under that and the flywheel tends to shatter. Well that's what I hear.... If you are interested I've got a stock GSR flywheel lightened to 12 lbs I'm gonna be selling soon.

12lbs is the lightest a stock Honda flywheel should be taken to. ACT were the first to do so... I have an ACT Honda lightened flywheel... it's great, but you shouldn't rev it to capabilities beyond the tach readings, since the B-series flywheels are the same...9200rpm should be it's max and 9000rpm should the max for D-series flywheels.

Will any of the aftermarket flywheels be able to handle 10,000 Rpm?
That is my goal for the B16 that I swap in.

A flywheel purpose is to smooth out power from the engine ....

the pistons are going .. up down up down ..... spinning the crankshaft .....
putting a hugh dead weight there ... smooth up the up down up down pulse from the piston spinning the crank ....
(that a bad example .. but give u a basic idea of what a flywheel do)

ligthen it wouldn't INCREASE ur HP rating of the engines ...
however .. if u imply Lighter = faster ......
lightening up the drivetrain(flywheel) .. might free up some energy used to spin the flywheel the first place .....

it wouldn't affect the engines itself .. but by freeing up weight from the drivetrain will allow the engine spin up faster ( the rpm will climb faster AND also drop faster ....it will also drop faster because less energy will be stored in the fly)...

what i means is .... go buy a lighter flywheel if u want to the rev go by faster .....
therefore hitting the max power range faster ...
