Default H22A7 Engine Noise

Hi

Yes I know this is the prelude forum, but the accord forum is not getting many hits
on this question and the engine is a basic derivative of the prelude H22
Let me tell you a story of a H22A7
I have a Honda Accord Type R (European) with a H22A7 engine.
In the past couple of thousand miles I have noticed a knocking noise from
the engine when slipping the clutch and reving the engine between 2,000-3000 rpm
This only occurs between these rev ranges and only between these rev ranges and
sounds like a top end block noise (Pinking, Piston slap, camshaft possibily)
The local dealer has listened to the noise and
1) Thought it was bottom end (so replaced main bearings, old ones didn't show any unusual wear)
2) Problem remained to replace main bearings with oversized bearings
3) Problem remained so referred to honda technical. They said replace cambelt
tensioner (A known problem) so dealer replaced this
4) Problem remained so dealer replace knock sensors
5) Problem remained so dealer swaped ECU
6) Problem is still there dealer is unsure what the noise is and how to rectify

Question: Has anyone experienced any similar problems with H22 engines particular H22A7 ?
Any ideas as to what may be causing the noise (Its not pinking I have run RON 98+ for the past 7,000 miles)

Thanks

can you re-create it in neutral?

if so listen with a stethoscope to isolate.

Maybe it's the timing belt auto-tensioner (you replaced it already though)...you could replace it with an H23 manual tensioner...

is your balancer shaft belt aligned properly?

Can you create some MP3 of that noise? Maybe this would help us....use your laptop.

Hi,

The problem can definetly not be created in Neutral, only occurs when under
partial load conditions (not full load) i.e when slipping the clutch and reving the
engine
I will record the sound and re-post

Throw out bearing? If you are putting load on the clutch....

So if you where to slip the clutch at a higher RPM you get nothing? If you sorta pop the clutch between gears do you get a noise?

definetely sounds like the throw out bearing, a simple fix.. Maybe you just need some good lubing...

I was thinking TOB but also could be the clutch plate. Could have screwed up one of the springs.... Doesn't sound engine related more clutch/tranny

Hi

Definetly happens between gears, when on the move most particularly noticeable
1,2,3.
Have just found out that Car has detachable towbar, so someone has used it
for towing so high loading on the clutch is a possibility.

Hope to get sound recording soon

if its the TOB it would make noise regardless of revving. It should do it at idle. You would hear a constant clakclakclak. When u push the clutch in it should go away...or get quieter <-----(is that even a word)

im not sure if this is all correct in every situation but this is what i have noticed when people have had that problem including myself

How many miles does u're car have?
My guess, one of the motor mounts is bad.. probably the rear one.. i had this same problem in my LS Integra, and my motor mount in the back was just ****.. the one in the rear of the motor right below the intake manifold. check to see if the bushing in the mount is worn, cracked, flexing extremely or in the worst case (what i had) two of the three parts of the bushing are so worn that they aren't connected anymore and it's only hanging on by one part, hence the knocking. The engine is probably just kicking back and forth. i could be all wrong altogether though. but you never know, it doesn't sound like anyone bothered to check the motor mounts.
