Default Installing a tach

Do i need to run a wire to the distributor or no.

Is this method correct.

black - ground
Red - 12V ignition power <--- Is that my ignition where the key goes ?
Green - RPM signal <---- I can find this under the hood by the driver side correct ?
White - Dash lights <--- where is that ?

blue wire with plug, driver's side right by the fire wall. no need to run to the dizzy, for lighting run it off your radio's iluminumation or anything convenient.

1. almost any metalpart.
2. i'd use switched 12v. the easiest place to get that is at the sigaretlighter.
3. get your guagecluster out. it's got 2 harnasses in the back of it. RPM signal is the blue wire on the harness closest to your original tach.
4. while your gettting 12v from the lighter, get the dashlighting from the light in the ashtray.

I had the tach hooked up and everything works fine.

I can't find a place to run the red wire from.
I ended up connecting it with the white one to the cruise control.

But i don't like this setup because the tach light is on everytime i start the car.

Is there a convienent place by the streeing wheel where i can run the 12v red wire to ?

Maybe the dimmerswitch or the headlight handle (under the plastic) but if you always drive with your lights on like i do it won't make a differance.

the console with the cigarettelighter and ashtray on my EG8 has a harnass with 3 wires in it. 12v switch - dashlight - ground.

but you can get dashlight from any switch that lights up. or from the clock, that dims with the daylights on.

I took power for my indiglo gaugeoverlays directly from the circuitboard on the back of the cluster

the switches on your dash are illuminated, right?
and those 4 wires from your tach are already running inside your dash, right?

your take out any 1 of those switches and measure what happens when you switch your lights on and off on every pin with a voltmeter/multimeter. you cant mess up anything.
one pin is bound to be black. hold the black pen from the meter to that and measure the others, one of the should only be giving 12v when the lighs are on.
splice the white wire from the tach into that one.
