Default Differences in S2000 from 2000- 2003?

In the market for a slightly used S2k and would like to know what changes were made to car in the first years. I am aware of whats new on the '04, just interested in '00-'03.

Exterior, Interior, SoftTop changes, suspension adjustments???

Thank you in advance

00-01: windscreen added; floor mats became standard equipment
01-02: glass window, door tweeters, suspension, tranny, and ecu tweaks
02-03: color changes only

So in everyones opinion; Is an '02 the best used one to buy? Most of the '02's are a bit more than I would like to spend.

Is the soft top motorized? Glass rear window? How does this work?

the soft top is motorized. the MY02+ has a glass rear window which is more durable thanthe old plastic window. try to get a 02+, most problems were fixed. search on http://www.s2ki.com and you'll get good results too.

I'd disagree. If an '02 will be a stretch for you then go with the older one and buy in your comfort range. The changes between the '02 and the earlier models were minimal. Yes, it has a more durable glass window, but it's also half the size of the plastic one. If you take care of the plastic, you'll be fine. I've never heard anyone praise the door tweeters; you'll either replace the stereo or you won't. The suspension and ECU tweaks were minor...very minor.

If an '00 is in the range you want to spend, go for it. Keep in mind that this car will eat tires faster than most others and the insurance might be higher, so the extra money will have some meaning down the road.

people are going to defend their MY's.

Personally, i've driven both a platic and glass window'd s2000. Lemme say this, size doesn't matter, as you're limiting factor is the size of the rearview mirror anyways.

There are more changes between 02-03 than listed here. Go to the libary at http://www.s2ki.com for extensive discussion about the differences.

I own a MY '00 and love it but I would not suggest that anyone buy a used '00 or perhaps even the '01. I've seen too many problems with the differential, transmission, clutch and even the infamous #4 cylinder problem. The soft tops have a problem with spots wearing thin behind the side windows as well. I haven't heard the same problems with any significant frequency once the '02 came out. Most of these things could be fixed under warantee but often the dealer (or AHM) would refuse so the problems could remain in a few of these cars.
Whether or not these issues were actually fixed with changes to the design over the years will only be known after we rack up some more miles on the later cars. I have over 60K now but my tranny, diff and clutch were all replaced before 36K.

I live in Dallas and I can find 2000-2003 models for less than 25k all day long. I'll be in the market for one too in about 2 months.

for the amount of money you save from buying a used 00 vs 02, you can buy aftermarket stuff to match or beat a stock 02

wait a min, i thought that the 00 - 01 were more quicker than the 02-04 s2000 since nowadays most vechicles are becomming user friendly. such as quarter mile times 00-01 are running at 13.9 and 02 and up are running about 14.9 thats pretty crazy

Go for an 02+, glass windows is worth it... Those plastic windows could be expensive in the long run.

Again, I whole-heartedly disagree. If he's that worried about the plastic window, he could take the money he saves over an 02 and buy a hardtop. The plastic window is easy to care for. If you do care for it correctly, it lasts just fine.
