Toda B cams passing inspection on daily driver, can it be done
I have a GSR with a 97 JDM R motor and trans. I won the BFG Superchallenge and have the opportunity to have my head ported, labor to remove included (Thanks to Honda-Tech for sponsoring). While doing this I thought, why not get cams in my daily driven car. Questions for all that have Toda B's and daily drive your cars are:
1. Is it possible to daily drive with Toda B cams (I drive alot).
2. Is this set up reliable?
3. Can these cams pass inspection if I have a lean tune chip in my Hondata (stock burn). BTW, I live in PA.
Or would you leave stock cams in and just have it dynoes for the new head. Other details about my car are:
Motor is internally stock.
Throttle body is honed out to 64 mm.
JDM DC 4-1 header.
AEM CAI.
Act HDSS and Flywheel.
Apexi WS exhaust.
Carsound cat.
Hondata installed (OBD 1).
I want to install Toda B cams, cam gears and Ferrera valves, springs, retainers etc.
DRT is doing the labor and Headgames is doing the Head.
Lastly I Autox the car and plan on doing HPDE's and eventually road racing.
I plan on daily driving this car for approx. 1 year from now (I'm still making payments on the money pit). That all I can think of now, TIA Honda-Tech!

Talk to Jack (B18cxR) http://www.p1auto.com I think his race car blew something similar to that of an electric car during an emissions test...
RJ, You are posting to talk me out of doing cams in my daily driver? Car sounded great but would suck driving aroung like that. Maybe a little better idle than that for me.
PA emissions has become very strict in the past 2 years. They run your car at different speeds during sniff test, no way to hide. Is that how it was for those who passed.
While were here discussing this would you guys even do what I am suggesting, cams and what not? Keep in mind I won the Head job and labor to remove and reinstall.

Anyone else driving daily with these and passing inspection? Are spec a's better suited for a daily driver?

if you are looking for just a street cam then yes spec a's are for you spec a are street cam spec b are mild race cam spec c are full out race. you can get the spec b's and have it idle pretty good with the proper tuning

Without cams, there are two reasons why that car would not pass in California (can't speak to PA).
#1-JDM DC header is not CARB approved.
#2-OBD2 vehicles get hooked up to the machine for OBD2 system check. The car's computer is checked by the smog machine computer.
Properly tuned, the car's emissions should be within passing limits with Toda 'B's. As for the two things mentioned above, just check your state's website to see what kind of testing they do.

Thanks for reply's, I have already passed with my header and Hondata using a stock burn chip for inspection. California is stricter than PA still.
thought jack was in NC.

He was from Charlotte..... P1 is in SC. Not a far drive if he commutes, but he probably moved closer to work anyway...
What does it matter?

did you pass smog though?

Have any PA people successfully passed inspection with these cams. Are spec a's better for the sniffer than b's? From what I've read the B's are streetable with good tuning. No one ever says anything about passing inspection though beside what was posted in this thread. With a stock burn for B18C5 for Hondata should pass me on smog test I'm assuming. I'll just get a burn for that and then a burn for performance that I will run normally. Again I am going to daily drive this car for approx 1 more year. I autox mainly with the hope of doing a few HPDE.
The PA OBDII emissions check will fail if they plug into an OBDI Hondata chipped ecu...stock burn or not (it's the wrong ecu for your car) my suggestions would be to either:
A - Find a way to avoid emissions inspection (short mileage clause, or a friend
to help you out )
B - Get a stock ECU for your car and try to pass with the B's in... retard the timing and make sure you have good spark plugs / cap / rotor, etc. They only check part throttle and idle AFAIK...
C - Swap completely back to stock for emissions - cams and all (not easy, but you will pass)...

(who's ITR is going in for PA inspection this week...)

Think my stock gsr ecu will work? I am not to confident now on cams passing inpection. I am definately not switching cams to pass inspection.
No one has passed in PA it seems with these cams presently.

Nobody replied from PA besides one person. I can't believe no one runs cams in this whole dam state! C'mon Honda-Tech, help me out.
