Default NEED GUIDANCE ON BUILDING A B16. insight greatly appreciated

i tried searching for b16 build up but unfortunately search goes by title and any valuble information buried int he thread is nullified unless mentioned in the title. I read some threads with great information but i am still in need of guidance. I'm kinda new to NA. i've been researching more on turbo setups but i decided that for reliability and some budget to keep in mind, i just want to go with a moderate na setup.

my situation:
i might be able to buy a b16 bare block w/ cranks for very cheap.

which pistons/rods would you recommend. i would like to have a slightly higher compression ratio than stock, but stock will do fine as well. I also read that all vtec heads are the same, but the p72 head has had something done to slightly increase compression? i dont know, please inform me. other than that... would i be able to use ctr pistons in the bottom block? would i have to get a deck plate? and by how much. (i was just introduced to deck plates and the differences in blocks)...

i will probably be building just the bottom end right now.... and buy a head sometime next year. but any information about building a strong block and a good piston/rod setup would be greatly appreciated.

im pretty sure all VTEC heads aren't the same .. the b16a2 and b18c5 share they same head, besides a different valvetrain and mild PnP from the factory. The b18c1 head should be different, and has square combustion chambers which change the compression.

Someone who knows a little more then me can correct/back me up on this, but i thought i'd get the ball rollin.

you summed it up pretty good there all the vtec heads do have dif flow characteristics type r head has a mild p&p gsr yields higher compression due to the shape of the combustion chamber

as for the block really i wouldnt go b16.... just go with one of the 1.8's if your gonna piece together the motor. but if you really want to stay with the b16 then yes ctr pistons will fit, no need for rods spend your money else where... to up the compression you can do multiple things, mill the head, thinner headgasket, or higher compression pistons...... the possiblitys are endless let us know more of what your goals are so we can give some more insight

b18c block / b16a2 head .... poor mans type r. Compliment it with an ITR or Skunk2 intake manifold, ITR throttle body, CTR cams and valve train, JDM ITR 2.5" header or something better, and of course, Hondata and LOTS of tuning ... and you have yourself a nasty little setup.

But with the b18c block, you'll lose ike .2 compression but gain .2 displacment.

But... now that i just re-read your post ... you wanted info on the block, lol.

So ... check out the September 03 issue of Hot Compact and Imports, it has an all motor 200whp b16 buildup.

For the block, they started with a 0.5mm bore to a standard b16, to make room for some JE forged pistons wih forged rods from Probe Racing.

With a milled cylinder head and JE domed pistons, it's compression ration was 12.25:1.

And that's really all they did to the block. This was part II of the build, but has alotta good info, and in the end of part 2 they dyno'd it at 202.8 hp.

Damn.

thanks guys. so far i'm thinking of having a peppy high revving engine, nothing overkill. i want soething streetable and gives decent power and also possibly autocross it in the spring. i guess i chose b16 as a starter because i hear the rod to stroke ratio makes it a very balanced and good engine. but then again, changing stuff around form stock would mess with that anyways. so....basically

what i'm looking for:
an engine that would be fairly affordable/doable (more so best bang for the buck) that will be swift on the street and pull me through corners on track. enough power so that a del sol vtec wouldnt pose a threat to me

Hmm .. well do you already have the b16? or thinking about buying one? if you don't have one, i'd get it. It's an awesome engine and it does have a good rod:stroke ratio.

I'd do it somethin like this ... b16a2(3), ctr cams/valve train, jdm 2.5" header, custom 2.5" piping to a nice muffler, vtec controller, good clutch/lightened flywheel, and a ITR inake mani and throttle body, and some sort of chip.

My friend has that setup, other then the TB and intake mani, and gets 14.4's in his 00 Si with full interior ... and that PULLS in corners, he did a good job with it. He can rev up to 9k (but he hardly does) and he does fine.

As long as you use the same lenght rods and stock crank you will keep the B16's rod to stroke ratio that is so great for high revs

i didnt get it yet, but i'm kind alooking to getting a block. originaly i was looking at a b18b bottom block. but bare blocks seem to go for aroudn the same price (from what i've been able to find) so i guess it depends what block i get; where i start. anyone else that can second the notion for a b16 bottom block?

so far form the description that odiedogcx (thanks for the info btw) it almost seems to be like a ctr build up

but any other information/manufacturers that you guys can recommend i would greatly appreciate it.

id dich the vtec controller and chip and get hondata vtec control is basically a waste of money

Yea i totally agree .. If i had an all motor setup, that had some serious mods, i would be on hondata. But if it was just some minor things, i'd go VTEC controller. I don't have either, but i'm going to get the Hondata S200 with Boost, for my turbo setup.
