Why do people sell there 1998 R's for so much
Kelly blue book list them at 14,000 in excelent condition. and i have only seen them for aroun 19,000. the reason i am asking is because i am getting a loan for one. but the bank will only give me what the blue book lists it as

KBB does no justice for any limited production vehi. As long as there is a market for our cars, the price will remain up there. this is not to mention that you cant find cheap ITRs but as the saying goes 'you get what you pay for' dont expect to get a 100% perfect ITR for 12k-14k

You shouldnt expect to get a 100% perfect used car thats 5 years old either. People use their cars.

Not exactly , I have looked around and there are very few that go for 14-15k

I'll agree with RJ on this one, you can find them for 14k. Just get it inspect throughly and make sure it hasnt been hit or anything, salvage etc..thats if those things matter to you.

you're right.....i picked my 98 up for 13k with 60k on it and MINT condition. the only prob is a little paint chipping on the lip needs a repaint and thats only about $50. BUT the guy i bought it from went from the blue book prices and then went down a little.
just gotta buy from the right people

Try printing out some ads for the cars and showing them as "value".
People sell it for that much because others will buy it for that much. I haven't really seen 98s go for that much really. Many aren't that expensive. The 2001s are the ones going for 20k+.

Because there were only 1000 shipped to the US. Probably only 800 or so are left.

Jond I have seen that letter and ITRCA has it on file. I can also tell you we know of several R's over 1000. I have seen as high as 1095 personally and there are cars as high as 1197 officially registerd on ITRCA. That letter has little to no credibility and no hard evidence.

When I bought mine, they didn't have a Type R in their system to look up loan value. They went off GSR wholesale and that's all that they would give me. I didn't need to finance much, but I would have been screwed if I wanted to finance it all. I would never sell my CW ITR right now for $14k, supply and demand. CW is where it's at!!!

I thought the numbering was not limited to cars shipped to the US... i.e. there could be 2000 total, but only 1000 shipped to the us... as an example.

A car with higher-than-average mileage (which 60K is) is, by definition, in below-average condition.
There's a difference in market value between a car with 60K miles on it (or more!) and one with, say, 20K miles. Just like there ARE differences in condition. You can get a '97-98 that's somewhat beat up and/or has high miles for $14K, and you can get a '97-98 that's truly in mint condition with below-average miles but you'll have to pay considerably more for it.

My opinion is that the letter is correct, and that either:
a) the United States cars share the same number sequence as Canada, so that even though only 1023 were sold in the United States for '98, the number sold in both countries went as high as 1197; and/or
b) not all of the cars in the sequence were sold - IOW some were pulled for race teams or for testing or for other purposes.
Probably both.
