transmission rebuild--what parts??
hey there
I'm gonna have a shop put in my clutch and Quaife LSD. I figure I should change key parts while its cracked open. What parts should I order from Acura to change out when its open (ie synchros, bearings, gaskets, etc...). Please, if you know what I need give me a listing!!
Its a 95 integra GSR.
thanks!

If there is no noise or shifting problems- I wouldn't do anything to it. You will spend hundreds of dollars on bearings alone and to do the synchros you will be buying gears- $$$. If anything- the input shaft bearings would be the first to go- they spin the fastest and are most likely to make noise first.
I will let you know. i wish i had the guts and the time to *** around with dropping my tranny. I guess its not that hard but never having done it I hesitate. I was quoted around 8-10hrs without a rebuild so I guess around 4-500 bucks to do the whole job. I am looking to find a place that will let me hang out while they do it so I can learn something. Most places hesitate to let me do that.
My tranny works great right now with near 70K on it. No grinding or noise but it does get stuck when at stop trying to get it into gear sometimes, esp reverse. I suppose thats normal with these trannies. Transmission places leave things so open ended that I expect that I may get a phone call once they have it open telling me I need the whole thing rebuilt. I trust no mechanic

That's NUTS. A transmission shop near me quoted me $200 (about $150 US) to install an LSD if I bring them the transmission out of the car... you could save big $$$ by dropping it yourself!
man, dropping it may be one thing, putting it back without a lift is another. i know my limitations and I have never taken out axles or dropped a tranny. Playing with the engine and installing a turbo, changing timing belt, brakes---that I can do. I'm plain scared to tackle the tranny without help and around here, there aren't many import gearheads to help out. Wanna come to northern PA and help me???
Dude don't be scared to drop a tranny, changing a timming belt is twice as hard as dropping that tranny. They are tit, im only 19 and I have been tearing these trannys out since i was 16 and i taught myself. U can't be sceeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrd just rip on er'

If you can Bench Press then u can do it. I know its kind of a ghetto way but "we" Mechanics w/o shops and lifts know how to improvise. Have a second person handy to "spot" you, remove tranny wiggling it off of its output shaft and lower it on ur chest. Installation is reverse, bench press it up onto the motor and have that second person start tightining the tranny bolts.

hahaaha, that is EXACTLY the way I get it back on. I usually just stick a cinder block under the trans and set it down on that.
I always climb under the cars with 3-4 towels on my chest and then put it on my chest. It's scary as *****

I remember Torin from EFI101 class....it's hard to believe that he once had sweaty palms when it comes to cracking open a transmission....considering that he's a MD.
Which parts to replace depends on the extent of wear on the parts. The biggest job I've done required replacing all but 1st gear and reverse gear, the needle bearings, the diff, final drive ring gear, shafts, and the housings. It was a $1000+ parts order for that one.
I can usually get away with just replacing the diff bearings, clutch housing mainshaft bearing and seal, and reshimming the diff.

I know Bense told me once that with d-series trans, the best way to fix synchros cheaply is to get them from a vx/cx trans, as they are rarely abused. In your case, I'd assume many LS trans parts will work in the gsr, so try doing it that way first.
