Help, broken wheel stud
A friend of mine broke his wheel stud because the torque on the lug was way too strong. I took it to my friend's shop and he said that in order to replace the stud, he has to take off the entire hub, which may damage the wheel bearing. Is this true? What would be a better solution? My friend right now drives the car on 3 lugs torqued at 80lb-ft, is this sufficient for everyday city-driving?
I got mine broken also and have been driving around for 2 years with 3 wheel studs on the front passenger side. Posted in here last time but no help. anyone??? People who has extended studs....help out....
when you pull the hub it pretty much ruins the wheel bearing. just get a new one. take it to a shop and have them take care of it.
as for driving on 3 lugs i recommend not doing it for any length of time. esp on freeway. one of my lugs fell off and the wheel would wobble quite noticeably.

I know, but the wheel bearing will be effected when the hub is removed. The labor of the hub, wheel bearing removal + the parts will be somewhere above the $250 mark.

If people took the time to work on their own car, they'd realize it's not really that hard to replace the stuff they **** up.

The wheel bearing doesn't always get damaged when taking the hub apart. I had 2 snapped studs on the same wheel! and Honda wanted to charge me $400+ to fix the problem. I said **** that, and brought it to another shop in my town. They charged me less than $100 and there was no need for a new wheel bearing. You just need to be really careful when taking the hub apart, and make sure to pack the bearings with plenty of grease.
I went to NTB (National Tire & Batter). They charge the same price up to 5 studs. I bought my own studs and brought them in, they were done in under an hour. It was $50.00.
I broke one, but I thought I'd just do all of them, so I replaced all 4 on my hub. Everything is working fine...
From my understanding, if you have the right equipment (slide hammer or something), the bearing isn't "always" damaged when the hub is removed.

On my '95 in the front, there's not enough room to do that. The steering knuckle doesn't have any kind of cutout to allow the new stud to be inserted. The hub has to be pressed out.
Ive upgraded my studs to longer ones and it took me 3 hours to do all 4 corners all you need is a big hammer and tools. I did this on my driveway.

Exactly what I meant, the front passenger, you can't bang it out and insert a new one in. I'll take it to the shop, **** the hassle

On some cars there is no way your going to get the stud out with out removing the hub. So for the people that say just bang it out, thats not always the case. Anyways if you have to remove the hub, just go rent a slide hammer and pull the hub off like that. Then replace the stud.

Yeah... on my ITR, there is a hole with threads that you can press out the studs, but not on my friend's LS.

This happened to me on my hatch...
The stud got stripped and would just sit there and spin around and i beat it off...then i went to fix it a few days later...and tried to put the new stud in and my dad convinced me that the ''splines'' in the hub were stripped so i couldnt put a new stud n with out a new hub,etc,etc,...so i still dont know if theyre stripped or not..but i've been meaning to get mine fixed...
