So my car broke down today...
Oh yeah! And why not? I was only on my way to the bank to pay it off... what better time for it to stop moving.
So... Let me get your opinions...
I'm driving, turning a left hand corner, and the shifter just kinda goes dead.
I can "put it in each gear" without putting in the clutch while the motor is running.
I did the "" thing because it doesn't sound like anything inside of the tranny is engaging.
The shift linkage underneath the car is moving back and forth and in and out like it is supposed to.
The clutch still has normal pressure and the clutch line under the hood is tensing and letting go like normal.
Both axles are intact.
My shifter has always had a lot of play from side to side while it is in gear, like some kind of bushing was worn out just inside of the tranny.
My hypothesis is that something inside just gave... I will be taking it to the shop for inspection and a new transmission tomorrow or first thing next week.
Have any of you had anything similar to this happen? Does it sound like anything that would take more than just a new tranny to fix?
Thanks a lot
travis

I thought that at first... but last time my throwout bearing went out it was stuck
in gear... and wouldn't go in or out easily...
also, it doesn't sound like anything is stirring around inside of the tranny if i just sit in it and shift...
anybody else?

^^ normally when the shifter fork breaks (atleast in two cases in which the 1-2 shift fork broke in 2 of my Si trannies) the car will not go into gear. usually this happens because the pieces of broken shift fork lodge inbetween the gears.

this happened to me but was not anything like you said. I totally messed up my tranny. it was stuck in gear...but id give it gas and the speed would climb car goin now where...the tranny fluid was all on the ground in about 10 mins haha
Well first of all the bushing that makes your shifter loose is not inside the tranny. It is at the bottom of the shifter where it connects to the shift linkage. Stock it comes with some shitty 1mm thick aluminum piece and some rubber. if you were to buy a new shifter it would most likely come with new metal bushings which would eliminate most of the play. second of all it is inside the tran and what it sounds like is that where the shift linkage is all connected up it is busted/got popped out. You could fix it but you have no idea so if i were you i would go ahead and get a new one. If you want to do it yourself and fix it i will help ya...
Yes... what is messed up is inside of the transmission.
I took a good look at it today, i will not be trying to fix it.
I dropped it off for a new tranny and will get it back next week.
Thanks for the help
