Tranny Woes: ATS, Synchros, and Bearings. Help Please.
I knowingly bought an ITR with an abused transmission a few months ago. It had a horrible whining under load from 45-55mph and a grind shifting from 2-3 at high RPMs if you did not wait. I saved up some cash and bought an ATS 4.929 and some transmission parts for the rebuild.
I used the following parts:
Mainshaft Input/Output Bearings
Countershaft Input/Output Bearings
Differential Bearings
1-2 Synchro
3-4 Synchro
ATS 4.929 FD
I had all the transmission work done by a highly reccomended local. When he cracked the tranny open he found three teeth broken off the stock FD and the differential bearings were going bad. So he replaced all the parts and I put the tranny in 2 nights ago.
At first the car wouldn't let me into 3rd unless I was stopped. I tried Revmatching and no luck. I have played with the car at many RPMs and always have trouble getting into third gear. It seems like the problem has become slightly better because I can sometimes wiggle the shifter and it will go into gear.
The whining has subsided a lot and mostly sounds like normal transmission noise now. I asked the guy about the 3rd gear issue and he said that it was possible that my clutch (ACT Heavy Duty) did not have enough throw and that maybe I needed to adjust the bolt on clutch pedal to give it more throw? I looked at the pedal inside the car on the pedal assymbley and the bolt is all the way out.
I'm very unhappy at the moment because aside from the noise, the tranny feels way worse than stock and is very "notchy". Makes me wish my car was totally stock. I have spent way too much money on parts and labor to have all these problems.
When you rebuild a tranny does it have a "break-in" time? Should I try GM Synchromesh? Can anyone give me any experience or ideas? I'm just looking for some guidance.
Any insight is greatly appreciated, thank you.

No break in time. If it's not good now, it's not going to get better. You can try Synchromesh to see if it helps... but what did the gear end of the 3rd gear synchro look like? The synchro rings are what normally wear first but the synchro teeth on the gear can as well.
When we rebuilt mine with all new syncros, it was a little notchy, but I had no grinding at all. And if you can get into other gears, just not third, then it is not your clutch. Maybe he installed one of the syncro hubs or friction dampenders upside down or something.

He told me everything looked good, and that I was doing the tranny right. He also told me that he stands behind his work, and I've had multiple people that I trust reccomend him to me. I just would hate to crack her open again.
Maybe something got installed upside down like you said. Is it something thats easy to do? People make mistakes.
