Default Civic DXi

My gaughter complained that her temp gauge would go to about 75%, the fan would come on and the temp would return to normal 45%. This is constant since she had the thermostat and water pump changed. Now Honda is saying that she needs to have the head gasket changed ($1000.00). sounds strange to me.

Any ideas out there >>............. Mike

88-95 dx (d15) is known for headgasket problems- the headbolts stretch- if the headgasket is leaking you will need headbolts and a new metal gaket from honda. The original gasket was a carbon grafoil type and is fun to remove.

speaking to her this morning on the phone, she told me that there no water was found in the oil and that see could hear no strange hissing (or spitting) noise from the engine bay. she does state that she believes what she could hear is some "pinging" at on some load points i persume. I thought that she might be using the incorrect gas ???. The problem only started after (beleive it or not) a MODILE service station changed the thermo and water pump. Do you think as I do that it could be the thomo temp sencer and or the radiator cap ?. What makes this a bit tricky is that I'm in the Caribbean and she is at school in NJ !.

thanks......... Mike

Be sure to have a HONDA thermostat- most aftermarket stats I see run hot or at inconsistent temps- one thing to do- when the engine is cold- take off the oil cap- if it is a milky color then for sure it is the headgasket- or if you take off the radiator cap and start the engine and you get a geiser of coolant= headgasket. Be sure that they bled all air out of the system (run car with rad cap off and fill with coolant). I always rec at least 89 octane shell or sunoco gas- stay away from BP (Barely Petroleum) it is horrid for Hondas.
