Default Removing an antenna

After removing all my audio equipment I no longer needed my antenna. I thought it looked pretty awful anyway, and I was going to replace it with the OEM antenna cover thingy, but was too lazy to find it, but somehow wasn't lazy enough to fill it up. Anyway, here's my how-to or whatever, I thought it might help someone.

This is for my 97 Civic HX, so if your car is different don't yell at me.

First off, you remove the antenna. I have no pictures of this, but there is a plug for the antenna down by the clutch pedal (if you have an automatic, use your imagination). It's a pretty hefty black wire. If it's clipped to the car, just cut through the little plastic zip-lcip thing with a utility knife or something. After this, unscrew the two screws that hold in your antenna. You should be able to pull the antenna straight out of the car at this point.

Now the the antenna is gone, clean the area. I used Goo Gone, and then Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover to make sure is was clean and ready to go.

Next, get an aluminum strip (available from Lowes or Home Depot near the door locks and stuff).

Cut the strip down to about 1.5"x1.5. It doesn't have to be exact, all this will be covered up. I just used two crescent wrenches and bent the aluminium back and forth to snap a peice off. Again, no need to make it look pretty. Also drill a small hole through the center, or if you're lazy and enjoy brute force like I do, punch a nail through the center. Screw a 2" or so screw through the hole, this gives you something to hold it up with later.

Now sand the edges where you will be attaching the aluminium strip with some rough grit sandpaper. Under 200 should be fine. The peice is going inside the hole, so obviously you cannot see where you're sanding, just try to make sure you get through the paint.

Now, if you're cool you can weld it, but I'm a loser, so I'm using JB Weld. If you opt to use JB Weld, be sure you mix it evenly. You won't need a lot, but don't be afraid to apply it liberally to your peice of aluminium.

Next, hold the peice in place. You can use a stong magnet to do this for you if you'd rather get some sleep while it's setting.

Sand around the area really well using around 200-300 grit sand paper so there can be a smooth transition between the Bondo and the existing metal.

Fill well with Bondo. You can do multiple player so don't be afraid to just do a little at a time. The more you put on, the longer it take to dry, and the longer you have to wait between sangings.

Sand well starting with 200 grit and working your way to 400 grit sand paper. Make a very smooth transition between the Bondo and the existing metal.

Sand the primer using 400-600 grit paper until everything feels perfectly smooth.

Paint over the primer using very thin layers until the color matches what you're looking for.

You should've used fiberglass instead. there was actually a hole in my fender where I'm guessing the owner had an antennae on. Fiberglassed it then bonded. Came out pretty nice.

thats a huge block of writing that is extremely not neccessary. Go flame some where else. Dont like the idea? close the window.
