If I take my bare block to a shop and have it hot tanked (or steam tanked) will that remove oxidation on the block or just the grease?
ok, there is a big differnece in Hot tanking and Cold tanking.
Hot tanking, uses caustic acid, you put your block in, it will not come back out. only the sleeves will. it reacts with aluminum. cold tanking will not remove it either. cold tanking is only for oil and varnish. only thing to remove oxidation that i know if, is glassbead, or shot peening. i am not too sure in the removal, but i am 100% positive on the hot tanking. it has happened to me when i was Co-opping while i was in HS at a machine shop, we got an earthmover head, we all thought it was iron, it took the overhead crane to put it on the tank. monday morning it wasnt there. FYI thats all.
steam washing is fine. i dont think it will remove oxidation.

Give it a try
I doubt it, but it couldn't hurt to try it out.
