Toda B cams . . . reliability?
How reliable are these cams, with proper tuning? I heard somewhere or other on here that they ripped some timing belts, even the recommended Toda belts . . . maybe due to poor installation/poor tuning? Thoughts appreciated

i drive my car almost every day, ive got a PE belt on. It was tuned, but now its untuned with a new header and fuel pressure regulator, still runs relatively well.
I daily drive them in my 00 Si with gsr swap...tuned on hondata s100....runs great..idles alittle lumpy at times but thats what you get with a more agressive cam...im running the stock belt and havent had a problem.

Ran the toda B's with PE belt for about 13k miles, then the PE belt shredded on me and bent all 16 valves. Call it bad installation or whatever, but i'm never going to run an aggressive cam like that on the street. IMHO when toda says that those cams are "race only" cams, they really mean it.
you know, this topic is so controversial that i do not know what to think. i do know that timing belt installation is a bit-- to do with correct tension and placement and even the OEMs are a prob if not done cleanly - i shredded one of these partially but stopped the car when i heard "early warning". i have been very careful at checking all segments of the belt (between the pulleys and the parts around them) both on installation and as the car is at idle and with revs.
no guaruntee, but gotta do what you gotta do and gotta keep checking until you are convinced all is OK.
in general, it seems that OEM parts are excellent but cannot just be treated without care and it seems there is enough experience of people running oem belts with success that it bears trying, which is what i am going to do with my "b"'s

Ran Toda B's on a B20vtec and B18c...never had a problem with OEM belt. Idle was fine until i dialed in some overlap, but then a little tuning at idle with a vafc solves that problem real quick.
Install them properly, tension the belt correctly, and you should be fine. PE belt would certainly not hurt either.
The only problem i could see is maybe the flapping of the belt due to the lumpy cams...me and a buddy of mine rigged up a second timing belt tensioner attached to a welded bracket to brace the timing belt , it bolted into the holes where the lower ps pump went. Worked quite well in keeping the belt from flapping.

I have Toda C's and the Toda timing belt. I'm also running the stock cam gears (my toda's were cracked when I bought them from some local guy) I ran the car with a stock p28 automatic ecu for about two weeks, the idle was perfect then, and now with hondata s200 it idles perfect. Oh yeah, I also drove it to work (20 miles from home) each day with absolutely no problems... hell, the RC440's didn't even kill my fuel mileage. You will have NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER with those cams if they are even halfway tuned.
