Default type-r turbo installation

i have a stock 98 type-r right now. i talked to my friend about putting a t3/t4 hybird turbo in, but he said in order to add turbo you have to change many engine components (pistons and stuff like that) i want to make sure of this so i am asking the experts on this board to help me out. Thanks alot

You don't have to, but for a safe and reliable setup that is scaleable, you should run lower compression forged pistons and forged rods.

seems like you need to do more research! Boosting an R can be a costly mistake if not done right!!....the window to make an mistake to a b18c5, is very narrow!....but you are in the right place, i suggest you read through the archives on boosting type R's.

just use stock for now with low boost 6 psi-8 and you should have great power.

anything more and you better do as your friend says and upgrade

right now my boys car is stock with a t3/4 drag kit hittin 8 psi with no problems been like a year now.

pistons/rods at the least.. unless you're going to stay in low 200's whp range, still with proper fuel setup.

Run the proper fuel management and have a good tuner and you'll be fine!

Ive been boosted for almost a year now, but ive only ran 5 psi the whole time, the internal work is coming in a few weeks. At 5 psi i havent had any problems what so ever. But you will get tired of 5psi and want more (like me, which is why i just spent a crap load of money on internal parts, still deciding on engine mang.)

Haha ... yeah, boost can be addictive.
Though, in hindsight ... I might have been perfectly happy just running a thicker head gasket, some reliable/programable fuel management and a dood exhaust.

the best? debatable.
but when you thinkof Jun you tihnk of NA performance. as welll asSpoon, Mugen etc.
if Jun even makes pistons, do they make low compression pistons? Prob not ? I could be wrong though
But you can prob save quite a bit ofmoney by going with parts that are meant for FI and have been making their parts for FI for quite a long time and are proven by the pro's.
Idunno i dont buy into the whol JDM fad.

Why not enjoy the stock R first?? I can say that I am 90% sure that if my car was boosted when I first got it, I probably would have killed myself with it. When you are young you are more susceptible to street racing, and street racing with more power then you can handle = death or paralysis.

Good Luck and be safe with it.

so how many miles did you get on that 300whp? my point is, if you want your engine to last longer, run less hp.. at 60K miles, even if it hasn't been boosted yet, car has some wear, running the most out of it will just fry it sooner unless he keeps whp at lower levels - car will still be fun and less likely to blow

thats for technical part of it..

I gotta agree! 16 years old and you want to drive a 300+ hp car?? When I was 16 I drove a 90 HP Toyota Levin and I thought that sucker was ultra fast until I crashed it...Learn to drive first!! My 2 yen

for non-technical part of it, i have to agree with you.. at 16 years of age, this turbo project may turn into more trouble due to activities you may get yourself involved.. simply because of age..

and $$$$ - if you don't have $$$$ for turbo stuff and repairs, and probably a beater car, - it will either drain your wallet or your parent/guardian wallet.

yeah you guys are kind of right abou the trouble part...illegal street racing has gotten really serious in dallas (and most likely any other place). maybe i should stay out of trouble and just be happy with 195 hp. i mean how many other 16 year olds you know with a type-r
