Default Difference in displacement: Gsr block vs. b16 block w/ gsr crank

What will be the difference due to the different deck heights?

203mm vs. 212mm... I think

The deck height as nothing to do with the displacement. The length of the stroke and the bore of the cylinders decides the displacement. Since you would be using the GSR crank and the B16 and B18 blocks both have a 81mm bore, the displacement would be the exact same.

b16 blocks are shorter. I'm not sure the actual numbers, but yes, there is a height difference between the b16 and b18 blocks

no displacement difference you'll just have a worse motor than keeping with the gsr setup

I appreciate the replies guys, so then are the b16 rods shorter?

b16b block is the same height as gsr/type r.
worth putting the gsr crank in.

edit: b16a however, yer on yer own

You put a GSR crank in a B16A = Custom shorter rods.

Yeah maybe if you do it that way. That's like me saying to you no you don't need custom pistons. Same thing man.

I would rather use an off the shelf piston GSR crank and have a custom rod made. Seems to be easier to get custom rods made to length. I know pistons are easy to be custom made for compression purposes, but to have a company try and make me one with a differnt pin location in order to work because I want to use the same length rods without having the pistons stick out of the block? I'd rather do it the other way.

For your average joe figureing out rod length and having someone make you one is going to be a hell out of alot more easier then doing the custom pin location. Not to mention you keep you availability of piston choices open.

If you want my honest opinion it's a bad idea to do it period. I mean why waste the time and money? Why do you think Honda changed the deck height of the 1.8 blocks?

People hype up R/S ratio so much. Yeah it does play a role, but it's not as important as everyone thinks.

Just as an example look at Inline Pro's all motor race car. Stock deckheight GSR block 86 x 99. That is disgusting. See's upwards of 9.500rpm shifts every weekend. Now yes this is a race car, but by your standards this would seem impossible.

The deck height DOES make a difference IF you are planning to use factory parts, If not... custom parts will be needed. If you put a GSR crank in a B16 block, custom length rods (shorter) or custom pistons with a raised wrist pin will work, but the displacement will still be a product of bore and stroke. A higher deck will allow you go even bigger in displacement if you follow the same principles of adding a larger stroke crank and custom rod length/and or custom pistons.

how can you use B16 rods on a GSR crank in a B16 block?

the 94+ GSR crank has a larger stroke than a B16 correct?
so you would need rods shorter than B16 rods to use the 94+ GSR crank in a B16 block.

right ?
am I missing something?
or are you thinking of the B17A1 GSR cranks and B17A1 rods in a B16 block?

You can use the GSR crank and B16 rods in a B16 block if you get custom pistons that have the wrist pin located higher or closer to the ring pack.

I see, I missed it in that huge post.... oneline about "custom pistons" and I didnt even remember I had seen a setup like this online here before...
they moved the piston pin location to allow the use of a GSR crank and B16 rods in a B16 block.

I got it now.

you definetly need rods, the stroke difference is about 10mm, who's movin a piston pin up 10mm? no one i know of! u would have to shorten the rods and then why bother? you'd have a lower r/s and a shorter deck hieght and same disp. as the gsr. maybe better low end torque but not nearly as good or powerful a motor.

i do? 10mm is .4" how many rings are you gonna run with a piston modified to work in a b16 with a gsr crank? 1?

Actually, I have done it and it is very easy. 3 rings BTW, 2 comp and a standard oil ring. Like I said it does require a custom pistons. In some cases, the ring packs are closer together and the wrist pin is moved up close to the rings. You can even use the larger stroked B18a crank with B16 rods. Read up in the post for more information. I am not the only one with success doing this.

i have a b16 piston in my lap currently and from top of piston to top of pin is >20mm. now u wanna move that pin up 9mm? or use a smaller diameter pin?
i jus don't get it. a b16 has a 77mm stroke(77.4 i've seen also but never measured it so i dunno but, lets say 77) and a 134 mm rod. so deck hieght from center of crank is 172.5mm. a gsr with 87.2 stroke, 137.9 rod has D.H. of 181.5.
that's 9mm difference. so to stuff the gsr crank in a b16 with stock length rods you need to lose 9mm off the piston ring area! not happenin! at least not with any reliability
sorry
it's like 5mm with b16block,gsr crank and, b16 rods ... still a lot of lossed rind needingness

You can tighten up the ring pack, move the wrist pin closer, Even bush the stock rod and use a smaller diameter pin. No problem...
