Default Last friday at the dragstrip (10/24/03)

I made it out to the track... Finally. I has seemed to be such a long time since I had been out participating instead of watching. I always seem to be working on other people's stuff and not my own, so when it comes down to race day, I rarely get to have some fun. This was a huge treat for me. This was also the first time I ever ran my car on the LINK ECU, so the tune was rather rough. My car was put on a set of 22" slicks for the first few runs. I did this to see if the gearing change would help me at all. I made a few 13.8 passes with a 2.2 60ft and the next was a 2.0. The MPH was down to about 101.5. I was expecting a Higher MPH due to the increased RPM's my engine would be turning through the traps, but I didn't better the 2.0 60ft time. I was also spinning the slicks between shifts pretty bad. I then went and put on my 24.5" slicks to see if the times changed any. They did and I was running a much better 60ft time, all being in the 1.8 second range. The trap speed stayed the same, but the E.T.'s were a lot quicker. I managed to run a13.401@ 101.2. I usually run my car in full race trim which consists of me dropping my exaust, passenger seat, and rear seat, but this time I did not drop the exaust. I put the 4dr on the scales and I was supprised to see that it weighed 2590lbs. with me in it. I weigh 190. This is even lighter than I thought. I haven't weighed the car with out the exaust, but I believe it is a good 60lbs. I am sure that the weight loss and the power gains would have made for even faster runs, but I have yet to see what difference they will make. Hopefully this comming Friday I will be able to drop the exaust and run my race pipe. This actually gives me a gain of about 10WHP over the "street" exaust. A few tuning issues showed up during the passes, but they seemed limited to only running hell rich as I was leaving a heavy trail of black smoke down the track. My wideband indicated rich as well, but I did not get enough passes to work that issue out. The next issue was a "bucking" that occured during each shift. This I believe was fuel related as well. Overall, I think it was a good trip and I learned a lot about the car. Next weekend should be even better.

I put the SMSP #3 prototype 4-2-1 header on my car last night and I found a few things interesting. The exaust note changed completely. It sounds even deeper and the RPMs seem to climb much faster. I also found the I had to add a lot more fuel in the midrange as well. If the production run H22 SMSP header is based on this, I think there will be a lot of very happy H22 owners soon...

I did a baseline with the #1 prototype and it made the same power as my old dyno, however it was 60 degree warmer and my tune was very rough. The power on the #1 was 229.8 and 172tq. This was very similiar to my old sheet that has been posted from time to time. I hope to get to a dyno possibly tonight or tommorrow, because after putting this #3 header on my car it feels completely different. I hope it is not just my imagination.

good runs man! believe it or not, your race weight is only about 200lbs more than mine, LOL. last time i weighed in, it was 2330lbs and i weigh 190 as well.

tuning is obviously a must, you are totally down on power compared to your older runs. 101mpg trap speeds isnt a 230whp car w/ your current race weight. more like 205-215 or so judging by the MPH. ive trapped as high as 95 before and i know im not making more than about 140whp, if that.

those 22s are hard to get used to, i tell ya. i have yet to break out of the 1.90s but some people in lighter weight civic/crxs, cut 1.60s all day.

all in all, i would say you got some good baselines on the "newest" engine. good job!

I was really suprised on the weight. I still wonder if it is correct though... for the simple fact that the last time I weighed the car it was 2770 with me in it, but I had not taken out my passenger and rear seat. Considering I have MOMO rookie seats that are fairly light and the rear seat doesn't weigh 20 lbs, the weight drop doesn't add up. I hope to verify this soon.

I think the E.T.'s will get quicker since the car had a mean "buck" between shifts. It was clearly a visible hesitation. I think I may have been dumping too much fuel at the shift points, so definately it hurt some. Once that is worked out and the passes get "smoother" the E.T.'s should drop. As far as the trap speed, I think my tune is still way off from where it should be. I still have yet to fine tune the mapping on the ECU and I have yet to adjust the cam gears. I hope to get those trap speeds back up soon.

The engine is bored and stroked. I shift at 7800. At this point there is not a reason to go any higher based on my dyno sheet.
