Default Cam install help. sohc *urgent*

Ok, so I tried to install a cam on my d15b7(delta 272cam).
and I failed miserably.

I'm really not sure what went wrong, but
the car will not start up, it chugs ,but wont turn over.

I tried taking out the new cam and putting the stock back in,
same result, but slightly different sound(not as loud).

some ppl suggested that my cam timing might be off by 180 degrees,
but when the cam is at TDC for piston 1, the crank is at TDC also.

I tried taking the timing belt off(with the cam at TDC1), and rotating the crank 360(for every 180 the crank rotates, the cam rotates 90.. so I figured 360 would do a 180.. heh.. um.. that sound right?). then putting the belt back on.

stil same result.

BUT another prob, when I try to start the car now, if I try for too long, it'll kinda die out...

Ok, ANY help, this is getting kinda urgent here.

THANKS ALOT H/T I'M COUNTING ON U

The cam can't be off 180 degrees because the key way should be pointing up.

I would re check the firing order and make sure you have that correct. Usually what I've dealth with is the order got crossed, and that makes the cluggin noise also </TD></TR></TABLE>

yeah that might be something,
thinking back on my first attempt, I remember fidgeting with the part of the distributor that connects to the cam, so that MAY have gotten out of spec.

unfortunately I have no clue how to check firing order(yes.. i'm verymuch a noob at engine work )

ALSO, I went back over the service manual, reading through various parts of the install(rocker arms, cam, blah blah). and I realized that I didnt tighten down the cam holder bolts 2 turns at a time in the specific order specified(i just kind of went at it). It says you need to do this to avoid "binding the valves".
Could this also be it?? If so .. how to go about fixing that??

err, again thank you VERY much for help!

check on the cam by the distributor side there is a lip on the cam, that fits into a groove in the cam caps....i have had these not line up and bind on me a few times after install.

you have to take it all back apart and make sure the lips is as centered in the groove as possible...

not saying this is your problem, but check it, it could be

hope this helps..

how are you checking that the #1 piston is at TDC? you could remove the #1 spark plug, and stick a longgggggg screwdriver in there... turn the crank by hand and see when the screwdriver is at its highest. done. bottom end is at TDC. now you do the head, line up the cam gear to TDC. line up the dizzy, it fits only a certain way (cam goes in dizzy). i hope this slightly helps... firing order is 1 3 4 2... on the dizzy its bottom left 1, top left 3, top right 4, bottom right 2... it says in the guide anyway...

EDIT: where in sf are you located? i can swing by sunday afternoon...
