Default Cam installation. What should be replaced? p/n list?

I was doing a cam install the other day, and was wondering what should be replaced if doing it on a motor that has seen a lot of miles.

I was thinking that I should make a post that could be referred to in the event someone else was needing info.

I think the cam seals (on both sides), valve cover gasket, and valve cover grommets should be replaced. Maybe some hondabond...

If anyone can think of anything else, please post up. Please post honda P/N's, that way ppl can go to their dealer source and know exactly which parts to order (and in what quantity). Thanks.

You'll also need some feeler gauges, 19mm, 14mm, 12mm DEEP, 10mm sockets.....

check internal parts.. especially retainers, check rocker arms too and see if anything is worn out or any scratches

.....nobody has the p/n's?

I'll also add 2000 grit sandpaper to this list. Just to make sure the journals are nice and smoooove.

I would recommend:

Two(2) Cam Seals P/N:91213-PR3-004
One(1) Valve Cover Gasket P/N:12341-PR3-000*
Four(4) Spark Plug Tube Seals P/N:12342-PT2-000*
Eight(8) Valve Cover Grommets P/N:90442-P73-J00*
One(1) Honda Bond P/N:08718-0001
Two(2) Camshaft Keys P/N:90741-657-000**

*These items need to be inspected before replacement.
**This only applies to Kenny, because he WILL lose them.

Since the Timing Belt will be off, I recommend checking:

1. Timing Belt 14400-P72-014
2. Tensioner 14510-P30-003
3. Crank Seal 91212-PR3-003
4. Oil Pump 15100-P72-A01

I think he uses the sand paper to smooth out the head where the head bolts go into. Sometimes it gets rough and causes the cams to snap.

Can you buy all the necessary gaskets as a kit or do you have to buy them individually?
Thanks

I know I need these.....

(1) Valve Cover Gasket P/N:12341-PR3-000*
Four(4) Spark Plug Tube Seals P/N:12342-PT2-000*
Eight(8) Valve Cover Grommets P/N:90442-P73-J00*

I also need some of the 6mm chrome nut caps....I need at least 4 of these for my spark plug cover. How can I be sure I order CHROME for bling purposes.

Any idea as to price on the gaskets?

It was not a typo. The cams are brand new. The head is very new, so there wasn't cause (imho) to plastigauge it. I just went over the journals to make sure there wasn't any burs or anything that would cause them to snag/ bind.

Fyi: 2000 grit is like a polishing cloth more than anything abrasive.....

to me 2000 is pretty abrasive still.

to each their own...it sounds good in concept.

you mean this part#

12030-P73-000

Includes 1 v/c gasket, 4-sprak plug gasket tube, and 8 grommets that hold down the valve cover.

Yes, in the Honda Bible (i.e. the Helms) book shows you how to do it and give you specs.
