Default BURNED 5 QUARTS IN 1500 MILES... TIME FOR REBUILD????

Yeah, so i need to do something about this. i want to get some suggestions on the best way to go when doing a rebuilt. just replace rings? new pistons? go .25 over? etc. some people have told me that i'm better off buying a whole new shortblock, what i need is reliability. i'm using the car mostly for work now so i cant really worry to much about HP. so any advice on what to change while i'm getting that done or the best way to go at it is appriciated. thanks

I'm in the same boat man. I have 191k on my '95 GSR, it eats about a quart of oil every 700 hundred miles, and does blow blue smoke when tached out. I would recommend boring the engine over .025". The cylinder walls get taper to them, or just get out of spec roundness wise. You could half-*** your rebuild and hone out the cylinder walls, replace the rings, etc... but you will end up back in your current situation in no time. Replace your pistons with CTR .025's to bump up your compression, replace rod bearings, maybe valve seals just for peace of mind. Buying a used shortblock is silly, you never know what kind of abuse the engine has been through. By replacing everything with brand new parts, you'll basically have a new motor. Prepare for some down time, but it will be worth it once everything is put back together and running.

Me on the other hand... I get to take the head off my car tonight and see the damage done by my stupidity. Might be a good time to start my rebuild.

Good luck with whatever route you decide to go down.

hoing the block and replacing rings is a waste of labor since everything take this opportunity like vteccivicex stated upgrade piston and get new rings and all new bearings.........then you have one hell of a motor CTR piston aren't that ideal in a GSR motor compression to high some jdm itr are reasonable on pump gas....even usdm is fine since the combustion chamber in the gsr head will raise it to 10:8 still slight advantage over the usdm itr.............bore it .25 over so you have fresh new clean sleeves and buy piston and rings around to specs replace all the bearings and your good to go

It really depends if the cylinder walls are out round or not. IF they are, you need to use oversize pistons. If they are still in spec, you could get away with rehoning the block and reringing the motor. Replacing the motor would be dumb and expensive. A rebuilt motor can be just as reliable, and usually is if its built right, as a stock motor.

thats what i felt also, i think that its the mechanics mentality to just put a new motor in because i went to another today and they also told me to put in a new motor, but this time they said that they'd replace the entire longblock! haha, yeah if i'm doing this i'm doing it right and will most likely go with some usdm ITR pistons .25 over, i'd like a little more power but like i'd said this is my work car and i drive upt to 1000 miles a week. what can i expect to be spending??

I think I spent close to 1000 for my whole bottom end rebuild with new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, t-belt, water pump, oil pump, machine work. But it can vary depending on what you need and things that may go wrong.

Labor on my rebuild was $600. $300 to the machine shop for balancing and hone and clean on the block. $300 for the longblock to be assembled. I would think boreing would prob. be another $200.

I have some USDM ITR pistons, .25mm over, with a complete set of rings and wrist pins still in the Honda boxes if you're interested. $200 shipped...
