Default mishift story number 485749.58b

I have about 6000mi on my car, 03 typeS. Mobil 1, no real mods.

I wasn't racing anyone, just enjoying the weather and my car.

I shifted from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. Instead of grabbing 4 (straight down! I know!) my fat fist shoved the shifter to 2nd. The music was loud while the engine sang a high-rev accompaniment.

The tach was buried in the silver and was probably at the 4 o'clock position. I stomped the clutch as soon as I could and my stupid brain was able to correctly shift her into neutral.

I coasted to a gas station where I got out of the car to see if there was coolant or oil dripping/bleeding/leaking from the engine. I popped the hood and imagined I heard an extra loud tapping noise.

Please tell me what audio/visual clues can help determine if anything was broken due to my poor shifting skills. Is it possible I got lucky (again) with my car? My previous misshift was going from 5th to 2nd on the highway. I think I caught that one exceedingly quickly as the engine was fine for the next 3000mi.

I ask that if you mock me that you also give me some audio/visual clues and suggest my next possible course of action (compression test?).

Thank you.

Well I don't know if this applies to an RSX but I just put a long block in a SI for a guy who missed the 5 to 4 shift and went to 2nd at 70 mph and bent most of the valves and cracked a piston. I would for sure check your compression if you have any doubts and see if you have a low cylinder.

There's a LOT of people doing this in their rsx-s.. I've driven a couple of my friends' a couple times and it just seems like another manual car.. what's going on now a days?

What's going on? I personally need to shift slower and then get faster instead of what I was doing.

Got my compression results:
160 160 165 160
(Helms says minimum is 135psi w/ max variation of 28psi)

I can't complain. I'm a lucky beotch. (again)

I don't know this for sure but could it maybe be that most people are used to driving a 5 spd and not a 6 spd?? I have never driven a 6 spd but I would imagine they are a little different with shifting.

yeah but thats only for people downshifting from 5th to 2nd by accident. they gearbox for the type s is weird with the 6th gear, so when they downshift to 4th, it feels like 4th sometimes, but it really is 2nd. thats a bummer

yeah you're lucky. were your redlining 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear?

A compression test will tell you which cylinder/valves need to be replaced. Definately the cylinder head will need to be removed rebuilt with new valves. If not, the whole cylinder head assembly will have to be replaced. That was just the top end.

Bottom end. Hopefully no metal chunks of the valves fell in there somwhere. If so, time for a whole engine rebuild or a brand new engine....

Good luck...

those numbers seem a bit weak for an rsx-s motor. . . my k20a3 pounded out 185+ accross the board. an 11:1 compression motor would be 200 accross the board. . . .

did you test the motor when hot? what was your testing method?

on the bright side, it appears that all four cylinders are equally fucked. j/k

Yes, the motor was tested when hot. I didn't do it, an old Honda guy at the Honda specialist shop near my work did it. I watched him do it.

He removed that plastic spark plug cover to reveal the Honda Motor Co. Ltd on the engine. Pulled out the ignition coils and spark plugs, screwed in the compression gauge, I think plugged up the three holes he was not testing and the other mechanic turned the engine over. one two three four. The Helms says to 'open the throttle fully'. Does that mean he should have been pulling the throttle cable near the throttle body or does that mean the guy starting the car should have done it holding the accellerator down?

The numbers are weak? Damn. 3.5 years till I sell the thing.

If I were you I would definitely invest in a short shift kit. I have an 03 RSX-S also and yes the shifter is buttery smooth, thanks to triple synchros in first and second and doul synchros in third-fifth....Anyway, I installed the DC-Sports short shift adapter and man what a difference...There is no missing wich gate you are in and wich you are going into. I also installed the metal shiter bushings from http://www.clubrsx.com
They were only like 16.00 and I got the SS adapter for @68.00. If you can fell the shifter in somebody elses vehicle first try it. BTW-Revo makes a total replacement shifter base but I was not impressed with the quality and I could have got it for free out of a used traded in RSX-S.
Good luck....

I'm pretty sure that every synchro in that tranny is triple cone. and for a hamfist, a short shifter would be the kiss of death, no offense to the thread starter.

honda transmissions take a long time to fully break in, my gearbox was tight as hell till I hit like 15,000 miles. You have to be extra careful until the gearbox sufficently loosens up.
