Default carbon build up

my friend pulled his fist gen b16 last night and i had a look at it ..
for a while now weve been trying to figure out where his power is..
stock block with crower stage 2 cams cai/dcheader/2 1/4 all the way back

with the cams he should be pulling at least 8500 but when i drive it it feels like 8 grand is the most its got???? we checked the cat its ok ...it runs pretty rich lots of black smoke due to the spoon chip hes got ...(i think thats part of the problem)

anywho....looking in his exaust ports there is an assload of carbon..not hard but lots of it ...i took a flat head to see how hard it was and could belive how much was in there ..at least 1-3 mm think of crap....also his intake mani was caked with oil inside could all this be a big enough restriction to stop power and flow ???
btw this is in a crx

sounds like a lot of carbon build up alright. Try getting it dyno'd so you'll know exactly at what rpm you're making power, then tuning would be next.

hahahaa, my 1994 GSR was like that in the exhaust ports and header after 100k miles and never opened before I did it.

may be running too rich.
may need to be tuned.
may be using oil... combusting it?

Yes that could be the problem, think about this if there's that much buildup on the ports and manifold it's almost a sure thing that the back of the valves is covered with it to,maybe so much that it's blocking the airflow. When oil gets into the ports it sticks to the valves because it's the hotest part of the port and cakes there.Do a leakdown to see the motors condition, rings might be bad.

you should check the pcv valve and lean it out a bit , with a fpr, check out the map sensor make sure its working correctly, i have seen a few first gen b16a's with bad map sensors, also o2 sensors..if your blowing that much fuel your cat is probly facked by now anyway

my thoughts exactly. and even though you replaced the PCV, it may be too late as that buildup has spread quite thoroughly.
