Default Transmission bearing question (Mista Bone?)

I picked up a YS1 transmission and took it apart to check it out before installing (always a good idea as pointed out in what I found!).

The input shaft ball bearing was total trash! (the bearing near the clutch) The seperator that goes between the ***** had disentegrated and pieces were all over the place.

It looks like I found it before anything else got damaged and it's possible to just replace the bearing (and seal) with another factory "ball" bearing, but I'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade to a better "roller" bearing.

(by the way, are you the same "Mista Bone" that is a moderator on that other Honda tech board?)

The bearing outside the tranny, near the clutch is the Throwout Bearing, not the input shaft bearing.

Keithv;

Ya, I know. I worded it a little vague. (you could even say "wrong")

I am refering to the "internal" bearing that the input shaft rides on. The reason that I worded that way is that there is another bearing at the other end of the input shaft.

Hey Keith,

Wes knows what he is talking about, and the input shaft bearing does have a propensity for failure in Honda transmissions. It is inside the tranny, and generally fails just as he has described. I seen 3-4 myself.

Wes,

I am not aware of the availability of any roller bearing "upgrades", but the OEM ball bearing is usually good for 120-150,000 miles.

Jaker;

If you have seen 3 or 4 go bad, is it possible to link to a bad pilot bearing in the flywheel?

I've never used any thing other than the OEM honda stuff. Generally, if the Bearing at the end of the main shaft which you call input shaft is ok, test it by cleaning it with brake cleaner and try to take the outside shell out. IF it stays on, you're ok. THere is a lot of free play on new ones as well so don't panic.

EFSiR;

The bearing is bad! I wish that I knew how to post a photo of it. It's kind of funny. Without the separator between the *****, they tend to just go to one side and leave a large area open.

The contact surface on the outter race is about as smooth as the back side of the moon.

What was good was that I found it before the bearing totally locked up and rotated the outter race in the aluminum transmission body.

no upgraded isb's that I know. The isb is the first bearing to run dry when oil level get low.

Have fun getting that bearing out. Space the bearings out with pieces of paper towel, then remove with a 1/4" extentsion through the input shaft opening.

Thanks to all for the input.

I didn't have any problem getting the bearing out. Since the ***** were still there, so was the inner race. I was able to "tap" it out with a socket extension and hammer through the input shaft.

It would have been a MAJOR hassle if the bearing had come totally apart. I think that what I'd try then would be to install an expandable freeze plug into the outter race and then hammer on that. I think that would work.

Wes.

Holy ****!!!!!!!

Killer idea about the freeze out plug!!!!!!!!!

I usually just cut through the outer race at the oil drainback slot.

You can see the slot here.........

when i had a bearing to remove from the tranny and the race had come apart, i turned a 2 jaw puller inside out and pulled it using that

i don't know if that description made much sense, but it worked

Why oh why do you guys in Ohio tend to collect transmission cases?? (and why can't you live near me in Los Angeles?)

Any idea of how hard it is to locate a "hydro" GSR gear set? What is a reasonable cost?

Wes

4sp uses the "small" isb while the Si uses the "large" isb, the isb seal is the same size though.

BTW there is ONLY one "Mista Bone" in the Honda world.

Mista;

It's off topic, but the reason that I originally asked if you were the same "MistaBone" was that you helped me out when I had a problem getting "membership" on that other Honda site. They wanted to assume that due to my age and background with Chevelles, I wouldn't be able to handle the "technologically advanced" Honda systems.

Your handling of the situation was VERY professional and I thank you for it!

Wes.

Hey Mista:

One quick tranny question for you. On the tranny I have in my garage, the ISB completely ate itself. The inner race was in 2 pieces on the mainshaft, and all the ***** fell out of the tranny when I pulled the mainshaft/countershaft/shift forks out.

After looking at the Mainshaft, there's a pretty distinct groove worn in the shaft where the ***** wore through the inner race. Is it safe to reuse the old mainshaft?
