Default Clutch Problem Diagnosis - Plz Help

Ok so this the prelude to the problem.

About 6 wks ago, i ended up burning my clutch pad. Basically launched at 6500 and couldn't slip it properly. As a result - massive clutch burning smell, etc. So my clutch after that felt wierd. I adjusted my free space (turned counterclockwise) till it MAXED out and still at that pt the free space didn't seem that much. But everything went fine....

So today, i'm driving and all of a sudden my clutch just goes on me. My clutch pedal felt weightless (no push back). So thought for a moment and adjusted all my free space back to the normal level. Only prob now is that i feel my clutch is slipping either from a glazed over pad or whatver.

What puzzles me is that how come it took so long for this to happen. BTW, I haev a Centerforce Dual Friction with about 20,000 kms on it and a Spoon Sports lightened flywheel.

So now i'm hoping that some expert on HT here can explain to me what happened to my car and what I shoudl be replacing now. My assumptions are I'm gonna need a new clutch asap.... But what about the flywheel, tranny "shaft", etc?

Thx

Oh yeah, also when i "ride" the clutch in first gear (acceleratin from stop), it's very bumpy and not smooth. I can feel it in my left foot that it's vibrating.

first i HAVE to ask .. why would you ever launch at 6500? thats pointless.. but anyways .. did you think that maybe the splines on the clutch may have started to strip. i really doubt that that the spline on the tranny would but i think the clutch splines might. do you have a way to pull it apart?

Addressing the first question. I was at the track and didn't get to find out my optimal launch pt. With a lightened flywheel my launch pt had to be higher than b4, so yeah theat's the story behind launching at such a high pt.

Anywyas, if the clutch splines are stripped wouldn't that require replacement of cluthc as well?

Oh well...guess this the price u pay to find out stuff...damn it

yeah if the splines are striped then you would have to change out the clutch however you would be lucky and just get away with replacing only the clutch and being able you reuse your PP.

launching at redline will definatly not help you at any track no matter how light your flywheel is... And actually i dont see how a lighter flywheel would affect a launch anyway...

Hehe, I've launched at 7k before w/no problems on my stock clutch - but that's with my ghetto burned out tires (no tread left, haha).

The truth is, you won't know exactly what the problem is until you pull your tranny, and visually inspect the clutch. But it is safe to say that you'll need to buy a new clutch (PP, disc and T/O bearing - the usual stuff).

That is a burnout, not a launch.

Almost anytime your clutch acts funny and is in adjustment you will need to buy a new one. Asking questions is just delaying the obvious.

I did a similar thing to my stock clutch in my civic, but had a different result. The clutch slipped excessivly immediatly after the event, but then felt stronger about 30 min later. I put on the turbo about a month after that and the STOCK clutch has held up fine for 6 months! I think I made it stronger

Well not really red line for me (forgot to mention B16A engine).

There is a diff with a lightened flywheel vs stock. Ur RPM's drop like mad once it contacts if u dont' slip properly; and even if u slip properly they drop in great proportion compared to the stock heavier flywheel. My goal was to keep my car in vtec off the launch. IMO flywheels are like double edged swords in some situations.

I basically made this thread to see if anyone had a similar if not identical experience and can tell me what happen with them. But by sounds of it imma have to pull apart the tranny.

My main worry is that I hope nothing happened to my actually tranny. If so, then I guess more reason to get the GSR YS1....hehe

Not to keep this going or anything but wouldnt something heavier slow down the RPM faster than something lighter?

7500 rpm launch on slicks with a stock clutch and 85 shot of nitrous.........

1.83 60 foot, I must be doing something wrong.

Think light flywheel=civic and stock flywheel=hummer. It takes alot to accelerate and decelerate a hummer. So when you let the clutch out the flywheel is overpowered easier by the mean ol tranny and rest of the drivetrain. Same principal applies to wheels and tires thats why everyone wants light wheels.

Holy sh*t, stock clutch too...
I have a CF dual friction and I think in a normal circumstance it should've been able to hold for a 7k launch but I slipped it bad and ended up over revving it I think - so it's pretty much my fault. *sigh*, what a waste of money: expensive lesson.

adding to typer's comment on wheels, u also gotta analyze the distribution of weight on the wheel. U can have a really light wheel but if the majority of the weight is on the outer edge, it is no more effective than a wheel 4 lbs heavier but with more weight concentrated around the center.

I only have the quick ET's scanned in.

After 800 timeslips, you start throwong them away. Find a nice Timeslip Manager program.

yeah that was my point, he said something about the lighter flywheel making it harder to keep his launching RPM higher... I would think that a lighter flywheel would keep it high...

I agree with what you are saying about the wheels, weight distribution is important. I was trying keep it simple and assume the weight was taken off evenly.(because the weight distribution applies to the flywheel also which is the reason companys have holes in some flywheels near the outside edge.) As for CRX SI it doesn't seem like you understand it quite yet. You are correct that the flywheel will accelerate faster. It will also deccelerate faster. So if shift form 1st gear to 2nd gear and shift at the same speed, a car with a lightened flywheel rev's should drop farther beacause the FW will lose it's momentum easier because it is not as heavy. So applying that to launching. When you apply the clutch to a lighter FW the FW can have it's momentum changed easier by the clutch(and rest of the drivetrain) than a heavier FW. Thats why the revs would drop more. If you did equal bogging with either flywheel, let's say from 7000 rpm launch and bog all the way down to 4000 the lighter FW should recover quicker because of it's ability to accelerate quicker(and change direction quicker). Which I think is what you are thinking of.

Think of it this way.

Take a 9lb bowling ball and a 15lb bowling ball. If u push both with the same amt of power the 9lbs ball will take off faster but also slow down/stop faster. the 15lb ball will start off slowly and proabbly won't gain much speed but it'll most likely go farther than the 9lbs ball because of greater momentum

So with a lightned flywheel, rpms go up hella lot faster but at the same time the moment u shift (ie ur clutch disengages) ur rpms will drop faster than a stock flywheel. That's why i also mentioend that flywheels on the drag strip are like a double edged sword
