What is a crossover?

Thinking of getting components like this but dont really even know what a crosover does because none of my current stock Crx Si speakers have one...

think of an x-over as a filter that protects your speakers. It seperates the audio signal and sends it to the appropriate speaker.
so you sub only gets low freq.s sent to it, mid range speakers get the mid range freq. and tweeters only get the high freq.s

To go even further there are two kinds of cross-overs.
Passive : most likely found in component sets with a set frequency (little box usually)
Active: this is an adjustable one. YOu can get up to 8 channels and run ine signal to it and then control what frequencies it sends out the other end. (most amps have these kind)
Subsonic filter is a passive crossover that eliminates hz below 5ish.
