Default subwoofer question

What does a subwoofer consist of? Since a subwoofer is a designed to play low freq audio signal, is there a filter built into the subwoofer to filter out the high frequency audio signal?

Also, does the subwoofer's enclosure have a purpose beside for cosmetic reason?

and also , what's the diff between woofer and subwoofer?

Wow you really are a n00b to audio. The subwoofer is the same thing as a woofer. Woofer is just short for subwoofer.

No a sub doesn't have a freq filter. That's the job of the amplifier with it's built in crossovers. the crossovers in the amp determine the freq range a sub will play. You get to tune the crossovers to your taste.

Yes the box does serve a purpose for a sub. Subs are not a free-air speaker like the typical 6x9 or 6.5" in peoples cars. Basically if you mounted a sub without a box it would just sound like a big crappy speaker with no bass. Different sub boxes will make the bass sound different. So yes the box is very important.

Wow you really are a n00b to audio. some people like to call speakers "woofers" or "drivers" you can have a midbass woofer, midrange woofer or a subwoofer. personally i think the whole term "woofer" sounds kind of dumb but hey...what can you do. Subwoofers get their name because they're designed to play sub-bass frequencies.

1. you can buy subs that are free air.
2. most 6.5's and 6x9's arent really free air drivers. sure they work when you install them free air but put them in an enclosure thats the proper size and they sound much much better. Why do you think people build custom kick panels or custom door pods?
3. if you're gonna be an ***, at least be correct.

Technically, when you install 6x9's in your rear deck, the trunk acts as the enclosure...

To the OP, the enclosure keeps the airspace on the front and back sides of the speaker separate, allowing the driver to work efficiently.

If you want to get even more techie, the trunk acts as an IB enclosure because its so big and not so sealed.
