ZC tranny rebuild
heres my problem:
tranny noise when clutch is engaged (pedal up), jerky shifting, and jerky acceleration.
i have to be very very smooth with the clutch and accelerating, otherwise the whole car wants to shake and buck. i first changed all of the mounts cuz thats what i thought it was, but it still does it. then i asked around, and i think 2/3 people said some bearing was messed up in the tranny.
any ideas?
p.s. - if i do need a rebuild, does anyone on this board near VA/MD/DC/PA want to help/teach me? i will pay....or know any good shops around the same area that can do it? which tranny would i get the bearings from? like when i order from honda, which tranny do i order it from?

I'm thinking it might not be your transmission at all, but your clutch disk. There are four springs set into the clutch disk (on the stock clutch, anyway), and when the disk starts wearing down, the little retainers that hold the springs in place can get ground off, allowing the springs to come out, either all the way or part of the way. My '91 DX had a similar problem, and when I was swapping out the clutch I noticed that two of the springs were in position, but there was really nothing holding them there; my guess is that they were "floating" in position, but could have easily fallen out and gotten lodged between the clutch disk and the flywheel.
I've had that happen, too, on a '90 Integra: one of the springs fell out, lodged between the disk and the flywheel, and all of a sudden I've got NO clutch! I was 20 miles from home, across town, so that made for an interesting drive home.
The noise itself might be from the input shaft bearing; the pilot bearing in the flywheel generally makes its noise when the clutch pedal is IN. If you're taking the transmision out anyway, I'd have the input shaft bearing looked at. Rebuild kits for the Si transmission (I'm fairly sure everything fits the ZC as well) are available for about $165.00 at http://www.standardtransmission.com; they feature all-new synchros, bearings, and seals. On the ZC, you'll probably need a different axle seal for the driver's side, since the intermediate shaft is a different diameter than the Si axle. But if you just need the input shaft bearing, check with Majestic Honda at http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
I've got a guy near me (he's in College Station, Texas) who rebuilds these things in his sleep. He recently built me a ZC/HF/Si hybrid transmission (ZC 1-4, HF 5th, Si final and diff), and the thing feels like a brand new transmission - which, as far as bearings, seals, and synchros go, it IS brand new! He charged me $150 for the rebuild, plus the parts (I rounded up the rebuild kit, the ZC transmission's gearsets, the Si transmission, and the HF fifth gear set), and for you there would be shipping. Or he can build you a complete hybrid transmission and ship it to you for $650 plus shipping.
There might be someone near you who can do something similar and save you some $.

so are you saying the jerky-ness could be from the clutch? it started happening when i first put the tranny on, with a brand new exedy clutch. the tranny was used however, so i thought it was the tranny.
the input shaft bearing, does it make noise when the clutch is in or out? im getting noise when the clutch is out. if i hold the clutch in and press the gas, the noise is gone. someone said if the clutch is in and the noise is there, its the throwout bearing. im not too good with trannies however.
man i wish that guy was closer to me, or if i knew someone around my area that charged that low for a rebuild. im thinking of doing it myself, but im not too sure of the tools required for such a rebuild. would u happen to know? i never thought of putting in a HF fifth gear, i think i might replace my Si fifth gear with an HF one. if i decide not to rebuild my tranny, i might have to go with your connect.
is your hybrid tranny in a ZC casing or Si casing? mine is in a ZC casing, on my d16a6, and im not too sure of which axles to use. i have ZC axles which came with the tranny, but those are goin out and i dunno if 90-93 teg axles will work.
thanks for your reply ~

if the clutch is OUT when you hear the noise, its the mainshaft (input shaft) bearing.
