Tranny of choice for b18a1 swap... opinions??
hey yall... i am going to be putting a B18a1 into my 88 crx and im trying to figure out which tranny i wanna use with it. im thinkin either a JDM Y1,YS1, or S1..... or a USDM YS1 (from the 93 gsr). any opinions on any of these from those of you who have had experience with using them? pros... cons? let me know. thanx!
If this is going to be a daily driver that see's a lot of highway miles, either a LS tranny or the JDM Y1. The S1 or J1 has nice tight gearing, but you'll be cruising down the highway doing 70 mph at 4500 rpm. You may not like the gas mileage you get.
I have a S1 on my b18A1 swap, its great for track/street racing, but blows *** for interstate/highway driving. At 60mph Im in 5th gear, and at about 3000-3500rpms.
You could always swap in a taller 5th gear, if you wanted to and get the best of both worlds.

good info guys thanx! yea it will be daily driven, and yea i usually use the highway when going to work but thats liek 8 miles there, 8 miles back... mostly city driving and dont go too far when im on the highway/freeway. THANX all.... any more info would be greatly appreciated.
i just thought about something that i forgot to add. i will be putting turbo on this motor.... so would it be wiser to just run an LS tranny? or would it still be better track car with the S1 or J1? let me knoe thanx!

yes the LS tranny would be better for turbo because the gears are broader. i heard people of putting GS-R 5th gears in the LS tranny dunno why or what it benefits.

How much tropule would it be to get the higher fifht gear???? Anyone know? I owuld love to do that so i have a cruising gear. That would be awesome. Right now, with the S1, I get about 250-275 miles/tank in my 91 crx si.

I just got the motor the other day and omg! I LOVE IT!!!! It is soo much faster than stock Si! And it sounds great!

I would dispute that.... Majority of the fast cars u see at the track run GSR or B16a trannys....
Shorter gears = Faster exceleration
Faster Exceleration = Faster car
If you want a all around good tranny.... Get the 92-93 GSR cable trans...

if you can find a gsr cable tranny in good shape, run that. my buddy had a ls fifth gear installed into his jdm b16 tranny, and now he loves it on the highway.
werd!! yea im trying to find one of those. this guy around the corner had one and was gonna sell it to me for $300... but his dad threw out all his old blown trannys and he thought the gsr was one of em so we're both out a gsr tranny. but hey if any of you knoe of anybody with one let me know!!

92-93 cable gsr tranny, even though they are really rare its a great tranny and can be rebuild if needed with USDS parts unlike jdm trannys.
B16 tranny would be my choice over LS tranny.

ok so i might be getting this J1 tranny off of this guy.... seems nice and said any decent offer wont be refused because the mileage is unknown. it doesnt grind and ran redline trans fluid.. how much should i offer? and how much did you guys pay for your J1's? i was thinkin $350-$400 maybe? give or ttake a lil more then those numbers.
I have seen JDM cable trannys sell for like 400-450 on ebay. I would offer like 350. I have the j1, and I cruze at 4100 rpm at 70mph. Its bad, but not as bad as some of the other people runnig the same setup. For the ones who are at a higher rpm at 70, what profile tire are youall running? Ryan

I would not use a B16A transmission with a B18A for ANYTHING but a dedicated race car. Non-VTEC motors don't like to spin at ~5000RPM for hours on end on the freeway.

werd!! i would get the lsd ys1 but i dont hve that much bread. thanx for all the info... i dont freeway drive that much, nor highway drive.... so im goin with that J1 tranny. after i pick it up i'll have almost all my swap needs. thanx!
i had a jdm y1 on the ls motor and it was by far much better then the ls tranny i had on at first. so y1 gets my vote!
