need help with cel
hey, i am in need of some help.....this is a long story but oh well, here it goes.....
2 weeks ago, me and this guy that makin a prototype intake manifold spacer were doing 1st gear "dyno" runs for some baseling power. i say "dyno" because it was on his laptop and i question its accuracy.....
anywho, it came out to 108hp and 112 lb ft torque. wtf? on an h22 prelude! we went back to his house, looked at ecu, it was the p13, but the vtec wire was cut for some reason! thinking it would be throwing a cel, i took the glass out in the dash only to discover there was no bulb behind it. we put one in it, it lit up....it threw a 21 and 41. vtec solenoid and o2 sensor heater circuit. we reconnected the vtec wire, reset it, and it only threw the 41 now. btw, the rev limiter was hitting at 6400, and vtec wasnt kickin in. i talked to several people around here, including robbie seal in case you know him from this site. they said it was in limp mode, and a new o2 sensor would more than likely get it out and return it to normal.
i put one on today, it no longer throws the o2 crap, but it still has the rev limiter kickin in at 6400, i cant feel vtec, and its now throwing the egr valve code(12 i believe) it wont throw the code all the time. it will throw it after i drive it for a while, but i cant figure anything out.
could anyone else make sense with any of this? im not too worried about the egr cel. im wondering why i dont have 7800rpm to play with, and why i dont have vtec.
any help is greatly appreciated.

well as far as the power/tq goes. that is about right for 1st gear. you make very little power through 1st and the power per gear starts to increase as you near the 1:1 engine/tranny ratio which actually transfers allmost all of the power to the ground that can be read after the powerloss through the tranny.
as far as the cars problems go. do these 4 things for me.
1. check your oil(and was the car warm)
2. check all wires to see if they are crossed/shorted/exposed/loose/unhooked
3. check voltage through each wire. vti/vto/vtm etc.
4. reset the ecu.

i just checked the oil, its good. there is about 3/4 left in there.......i talked to someone today, he asked me if it could be one of the temperature sensors or an aftermarket chip in the ecu that could be thinking the engine was still cool, thus not letting the engine use vtec and the high rev limiter..........robbie seal(9psi hybrid) checked the vtec wires, and they are good.....do you or anyone else have any other ideas? several people are suspecting an aftermarket chip in the ecu, like crappy ones they sell on ebay. how would i recognize an after market chip?
This sounds like a problem some people have had when doing the hybrid, your block does say H22 on it and not H23 ?
Was your car an Si model or vtec model by vin lookup? If somebody did a swap they might have messed something up.
How long have you been driving that car and not knowing that vtec is not enabled??

thanks for the replies......it didnt throw the egr valve code until after i put the new o2 sensor on the other day. it quit throwing the o2 sensor heater, but about an hour after driving it around, the cel came on for the egr.
the block is the h22 block and the head has the p13 on it. i havent looked the vin up yet. do i need to do carfax or just the first several letters/numbers on it? i got the car in the beginning of august to replace my wrecked 92 si. i had never ridden in a vtec equipped car except for my friends gsr, and he didnt really get on it for me to notice it.........

EGR does not put engine into retard mode....and you still do have vtec and regular rev limit.
Ive had an egr code for the past few months and the only thing that I notice is hesitation.

hmm, that sucks then, i was hopin that would be the cause.....someone found me a known to be good ecu today, so im gonna try it tomorrow to see if it helps. 1 shop around here think its the ecu, and another shop thinks the egr valve is the cause.........does anyone know how to tell if the ecu has been chipped?
the ecu swap didnt do anything. someone else has the idea of the coolant temp switches going out. he said it wouldnt throw a cel, just would trick the ecu into thinking the motor is still not warmed up. thus, not lettin me use vtec and giving me the low rev limiter
yeah, but like he said up above, his ecu is throwing the cel for the egr and his is not in limp mode.
the local shop is suspecting the coolant temperature sensors now. they are pretty positive that theyre the cause of the problems. for example, if the sensor was bad and was sending info to the ecu that the coolant is still cold, then, in return, it would be running conservative still. make sense?

ok, i had some time to look at the egr stuff today. i noticed a vacuum line that was dislodged from the egr. i put it back and drove around a while, it didnt come back on, but it doesnt always take the same amount of time for the cel to light up. so i dont know if its fixed or not.
i took the coolant temerature sensors off of my blown h23 from my old prelude and put them on. it didnt do anything. does anyone have any other ideas? its lookin more and more like im goin to have to take it to honda to get worked on. which sucks, because i know theyll charge me out the *** for it.
