Default B18a1 engine failure : broke timing belt gear keyway.

the following is the events of my day,
I was at the track today testing my motor after replacing the broken oil pump, clutch/pressure plate/flywheel assembly and installing the stock type R IM since my eldelbrock lost powere everywhere. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=643744 check for pictures

I was concerned about my slicks wearing out since they are almost finished and I wanted to save the M&H's for the NCRA season final tomorrow at St.Thomas. So instead of using my slicks I decided to use street tires and to tune the car by mph. best time was 12.8 @ 112 mph on street tires. I was extremly happy considering that I wasent launcing the car at all (driving off the line) hooking 2.1's and wasent shifting hard at all.

On the second last pass I noticed The shifter was chunkey going into gears, then on the last pass, I had to rev match to change gears. The only thing I was thinking is the pressure plate broke again. While on the return lane going to pick up the time slip thinking how I want to save money for a tilton and that im sick of breaking pressure plates, I come to a stop and motor stops, I figured that the disk and pressure plate locked up, causing the motor to stall as I stoped, I thought nothing of it a the time. I attempted to start the motor and I noticed the starter soundend funny, as if it was just spinning. I pushed the car and had it pushed onto the trailer.

The first thing I did when I got home was remove the starter to look at the pressure plate straps and as im turning the crank to see the straps, I notice the cam gears are not turning...... I was like WTF, I sat there looking stupid for a few seconds, thinking in my head, crank is turning,, timing belt is not. thats when I realised why the stater sounded funny at the track. But what was the cause? the timing belt gear keyway broke. why? I have no idea.

anyway riped off the head and 8 exhaust valves are bent. and the intake look ok for now but on #1 piston there is marks that the intake valve was also taped so it might also be bent, so it seems that its not that bad.

I mean it could have been worse right.

there is no key for the timing belt gear, its actualy part of the gear,
the timing belt gear spins freely on the crank.

anyone have any idea how this could have happend?

I wanna say too much power too fast, but I've never heard of this before. Maybe the gear was weakened somehow??
Was it the intake or the exhaust, maybe the Dizzy seased, or you floated a valve or something. I'm sure those keys are designed to shear to prevent something else from breaking.

I guess its all part of the learing curve. I was a bit dissapointed at first but now im ok.

wondering what type of valves to get for the new motor? I heard that Manley has flat face valves?

it seems odd to me that it would break like that. you sure the valves didnt hit first?

you know it would be great to get some ideas, since i have no idea how a key way can break like this, i have no clue why this happened.

i was driving the car down the return lane at 2000rpm, when i came to a stop to pick up the ticket the motor shut off. i went to start it and at the time i couldent understand why the starter sounder the way it did but it was spinning the bottom end and the cams were not turning. i believe thats when the damage happend. i only made 1 attempt to start the motor and when i heard the awkward sound i stoped and pushed it the rest of the way.

if you want to tell if your intake valves are bent, one of my good friends told me a good trick with telling if they are bent. you take the cams out so all the valves are closed, then just pour water in the ports and see which ones leak, volia those will turn up to be bent! alot of times you might think a valve isnt bent when infact its just bent a little bit...

Sorry to hear about that man, i like your car alot and hope to see it back up again next season!
