battery not charging, how do i check for a short??
the other day i had take my alternator off so i could change my compressor housing. later that day after i finished the batter starts draining while im driving home at night. driving with no lights and making no signals. everything on the inside eventually turned off while i was driving. kinda like the movie apollo 13, i even said to myself houston we have a big ******* problem. i took the alternator off the next day when i just barely made it home. i went to go get it checked and the guy couldnt get it to work properly to see if it would charge. so i assumed the alternator just happened to go bad, who knows how old it is. so i bought another one and put it on the other day. i thought it was fixed cause i also charged my battery. well last night as im driving i noticed my headlights got dim all of a sudden and look at the voltage reading on my turbo timer and it was way low
. so its sitting in some ******* neighborhood right now cause we couldnt get it to start back up. im pretty sure it wasnt my alternator to begin with. i think i shorted something out cause i forgot to dissconect the ground on my battery
but after the sparks started to fly i dissconected it
so thats the reason why ive came to the conclusion that something got shorted out. anybody know how or what i can look for?? thanks for any help

i see that all the time.. people think its the alternator but its the batt.. check that and let us know.. also make sure u got the post coming off the alternator pluged up
good luck.. let us know

do u have a voltage meter.... cause if u do u could check for for continuity. disconnect the battery cable that goes to the batteries postive post..then disconnect the cable that goes to the alternator not the harness... then check if you have continuity...if you do that is find....if you dont that could be the problem or part of the problem.... ok ... then check for continuity between the either end i mention to ground(any ground ..engine is best source)...make sure not to let the ends touch ground and do not connect the cable ends back(to battery r alternator) .... if you have continuity then thats a problem..... if not then the problems are some where else....but atleast you kno it is not the alternator, battery, or the cable that charges the battery... hope that is helpful ...good luck
ok so your saying to see if i have a current that will flow to the alternator? by disconnecting the cable on the alternator and the positive on the battery? hook up each end to those cables and see if a current will flow through? if so i get what youre saying. and the second part too. thanks
