Worst Oil Change Ever!!! Weirdest too!!!!
I am going to start with what happened:
The oil change was going as usual, I was putting in some MaxLife and using a genuine Honda filter.
After all was finished, I started my car to make sure things were normal, they were not. I heard a loud noise that sounded like a garden hose with a spray nozzle on it, and when I looked under my car, I had about 4 quarts spread across my garage floor! I turned off my car, cleaned as much oil as I could and began to investigate (after screaming numerous profanities).
The entire area around my oil filter was dripping with fresh oil, so I presumed this had to do with the filter. I began to unscrew the oil filter (which seemed to be on as tight as I could get it by hand) and when I pulled the filer off, a strange, strange thing happened.......there appeared a "mystery o-ring".
I have changed my oil a number of times and I have never seen this "mystery o-ring" ever before. Here is what it looks like (I hope this pic works)

It is about 2 inches in diameter.
Here is the only explanation I can come up with. The ring fell from somewhere, possibly through some tear in the space-time continuum, and fell perfectly on the threaded “nub” that the oil filter screws onto. Think of playing ring toss, or horseshoes. Not knowing this “mystery o-ring” was there, I screwed my filter on top of it, causing my filter to not seat correctly, leaving a gap for oil to spray angrily out of. I came up with this explanation after reinstalling the filter and adding oil and starting my car with no problems.
Weird huh?

The first time I took my car in to get it's first oil change, the same thing happened to me. After the oil change I had lost about 2 quarts of oil once I started my engine. Oil was all over the bay floors at the lube shop. So I then shut the engine off immediately so no damage was done. When the new mobil1 filter which replaced the oem filter was unscrewed off, I found the same type of gasket (in the pic you took) stuck to the bottom of the engine block left from the previous oil filter. Previous oil filter was my original oem honda oil filter that came with the car. Make sure you lube up the gasket when putting the new oil filter in so the gasket has a lesser chance of getting attached to the engine block due to heat. Since then I've used oem honda filters, mobil1, and bosch premium oil filters, and haven't had any issues. Thought I'd share my experience.

To prevent this from happening in the future, always wipe off the gasket seating surface w/ a paper towel before installing the new filter. That way if the old gasket is stuck on there, you'll find it and get it off before putting the new one on.
that happened to me. it's the o-ring from your previous oil filter, that was left on. me and my friend notice the dripping before he became to bad.
lol...must say though glad for this post gonna change my oil tomorrow. I'll check and clean before I replace the old filter. Thumbs up to h-t for heads up.
lol same thing just happened at norm reeves honda in ceritos 2003 crv 4k miles a lube tech didnt notice it and the car was released to the owner he got to the first exit on the freeway till the light came on then he pulled over and had it towed back to the dealer the dealer tried to put oil back in and run it but it already spun a bearring so they ate a 6K engine after all the labor and rental car ......
Thanks for all the replies guys, but that was the first thing I thought of too, and the old filter o-ring was fine. This mystery ring is much too thick, and oddly shaped, to be that filter gasket. This ring looks like a circular diamond (if that makes sense). I took it to honda today, and they thought the same thing, until they really looked at the o-ring, and compared it to a filter there, and now they have no idea either. My car is running fine now though.
maybe you screwed the flter on to tight. your only supposed to turn it 3/4-1 turn after it gets some what tight like where it hits the block. Also always lube up the oil filter gaske with some fresh oil before putting it on. As for that mysterious ring I have no clue what it is.
