CV Boot Job = DriveShaft Removal??
Both Outer Boots need replacing. Helms reads that replacing the Boots is the same as replacing the driveshafts. Is this really true?
Is there no way to remove the Joint itself from the shaft to faciltate Outer Boot replacement without pulling the drivershaft/inner boot/damper ring assembly?
I've read on some other cars about spreading a lock ring within the CV Joint to remove it from the outer end of the shaft. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks much.

Its not that hard to remove the axles, and its probably allot eaiser to work on the boots when they are out anyway ! It shouldn't take more then an !hour or so to do on your first time !!
good luck and have fun !!! ooh and don't be scared to use a little hammer action to pop those suckers out ( just be nice to them and they will ne nice to u !! )

How about dismantling the outer joint? I think that's what he means.
I've done this on VWs & Saabs, there's a snap ring, and the axle pulls out of the outboard joint. Then you can take the joint apart & clean it better.
But you still take the axle out of the car...

Yeah, that's what I've seen. (On Saabs)
It just seems strange that to replace the outer boots you end up replacing binding clips on the inner boot and damper ring. And you have to disassemble the inner joint also.
Thanks all.

Yep, that's the way it is. I just replaced my driver's side axle because of a torn outer CV boot. I was going to try rebuilding the axle myself, but when I looked at all the trouble and mess involved, I decided to just buy a remanufactured axle from Checker Auto for $70. The lifetime warranty is handy too, in case something breaks or I tear another boot. And of course I saved a lot of time too.

Thanks a ton dwolsten. Just looked em up at cskauto. Yep, about $70 plus shipping.
Hmm, decisions decisions...
or, how much longer can I drive on open boots?
Put in a req for a quote from raxles too, just for giggles to see what thier charging.

If they're not clicking yet, you still have some time. Once it starts clicking, get it done soon. IMHO it's easier just to replace the whole axle w/ a rebuilt one.
