I have a 99 Civic Si, with I/H/E. My question is whether I should go for an Apexi V-AFC 2, or purchase a Hondata stage1. My intentions, long term, are to stay all motor, with a possible full build somewhere down the road -- CTR cams & gears in near future. I remember reading that you can adjust VTEC engagement with the Hondata, but how compicated is that? How much real control will I have over my fuel map with the AFC? Oh, and here is one that everyone will love, I live nowhere near a shop with a dyno, so Hondata will be run on a basemap for a while. Will I see gains?

How tunable will it be without access to a dyno. What kind of wiring differences are there between the two? Are there any "on-the-fly" adjustments I would want to be able to make that I cannot with the Hondata?
once your car is tuned, you should not have to mess with it...
The Hondata simply goes in your OBD1 ECU, no wiring! The VAFC, must be wired into your ecu harness, which means cutting and splicing your harness
You can street tune it to within less than 5% of a dyno if you get a tuner that knows what he's doing!

So tuning it myself means purchasing the ROM tuning software, right? It almost wouldn't be worth it considering I could get it professionally tuned for less $ plus the gas for the 4-hour drive to get to Atlanta (nearest tuner to my knowledge). Will I make more power simply by installing it with a basemap?
there are some tuners out there that can go by what you tell them your setup is, they will use a known good base map and just make the adjustments to fit your needs.
This will be closer than you will probably ever get with the VAFC if your tuner is any good.

I hate Vafc/Safc's I totally regret buying the safc(2yrs ago) i have now. I wish hondata was around back then like they are now.

first and formost hondata is way more tunable than a vafc will ever bee. but i have a vafc in my car and i like it. second the vafc2 was design for the new si and rsx so save your money and just buy a used one unless u just have to have that new gray case
