Default Am I over analyzing between these two tires?

I'm trying to decide between 195/55/14 (victoracers) and 205/55/14 (toyo ra1) for autoxing

Pluses for Victoracer:
Smaller overall diameter so that I'll have more torque and the crx will sit a little lower for a lower center of gravity. Tires will weigh less too.

Pluses for Toyo RA1's:
Slightly stickier rubber? Wider contact patch.

One thing I'm thinking is that even though the victoracer may have a narrower contact patch, I could use a thin spacer to place the wheels further outboard. With the soft suspension I run (stock class), having more tread inboard from wider tires don't help that much.

So which tires would you choose?

Also, anyone know which tires are stickier when cold?

Thanks

for autocross - use the victo's. The toyos wont heat up enough to be usefull.

Out off those two tires i would go with the Victo, but a better option would be the 225/50R14 V700

Kumhos (Victo or V700) would make a better autocross tire, also why not go with a 205 or 225?

The Kumho will probably be stickier when cold.

If it were me I would go 225/14 V700.

OK, Victoracers it is. Thanks everybody. I didn't know that RA1's took longer to warm up I've been running RA1's this whole year on my Audi. I guess I've been lucky to grab FTD half the autox's so far with a local car club . Next year, maybe I'll PAX higher.

Victoracers dont come in 225/14's, and I want to stay away from the Esctas. I heard of too many bad wear stories about them at the track, and I go to HPDE's about 12 days a year. Anyway, I was thinking that 225's would rub, and technically, I don't think you're allowed to roll your fenders in Stock class. So you can fit 205's or 225's on narrow 5 inch rims? Wow.

And for 205/14's, I was thinking the tires are taller than 195's thus raising the ride height of the car and lowering the torque gearing. Plus, I was afaid I'd still get some rubbing.

Any of you guys know if 205/50/14 will fit without rubbing on my stock 14x5's?

Stealth, thanks for the compliment. You chip your 1.8t yet?

Are they 14x5 or 14x5.5?

I think a 205 on a 14x5 is on the border of being too big. I know a 225 on a 15x6 is a tough fit. a 5" rim is 1" narrower than a 6" (duhhh) but a 225 is only 3/4" wider than a 205 so the 205 is going to be an even tighter fit on a 5" than a 225 is on a 6"

Hmmmm, I'm not positive what size rims I have since I haven't checked with my own eyes, but I thought I had 5" rims from searching the archives. I have the stock wheels on my '89 CRX Si. I guess I'll have to take a wheel off and check.

Hmm, you complicated things now. If you run 12 events a year, my vote is a definite RA-1!

the ecstas that had the problem had the k6a compound. the new k8a compound is much better, but it is still _highly_ recommended you have them shaved. (like, unless you are going to run them in the rain, SHAVE 'EM!!)

i know a local guy that ran 225 hoosiers all around on his crx on the stock 5" wheels. he now runs them on his 91 si hb and won at the pro-solo finale in HS.

Nate, The K8a is the old compound and the K6a is the new stuff. I have run K6a compounds shaved and full tread for autocrossing and either is fine. However, I did manage to overheat them once with a co-driver and they started to "chunk" a little. That was with 10 runs w/o the regular cool down time between drivers and forgetting to bleed the tires
